This is a violet of the midwest that is found in areas of dry thin sandy soil. Mostly it is now restricted to the few areas where native vegetation persists. The cliff I was at today has many of what are now uncommon species since it was never suitable for plowing or grazing. This violet is closely related to the Bird's-foot Violet (Viola pedata). Not sure on the common name here, either.
