"NAKED EYE" HORSEHEAD

Posted By Greg Shaffer

Thomas Dey said:

I consider the Horsehead to be right up there as one of the most challenging visual targets, and have only seen it a few times under the most ideal conditions. Decent sized scope and a specialized filter like the H-beta especially help - and even then I can only occasionally say, "Yep - OK - I definitely see it!" One of those objects that images superbly in H-alpha but not to the eye in that band because it is so blasted DIM and our Night Vision "scotopic - rods" are blind to the uber-red H-alpha. So far, so challenging. About a month ago I got TWO Gen 3 Night Vision monoculars, added 12nm H-alphas and looked at the sky. YIKES! All the H-alpha stuff just POPS because the device of course transforms the view to bright green phosphor that one can look straight at. I can see Barnard's Loop piece of cake and the nebulosity to the E and S of Orion's left belt star no problem at all. I had assumed the Horsehead Notch (B33) would be impossible at 1x. But tonight I looked again and - I SEE IT! Just as it should appear, a tiny dark notch hooking in from the left and upward. Again and again I ask myself if I'm actually seeing it at 1x and the answer keeps coming back - Yep...there it is. So now, after the fact - I check the literature and see it is about 4 arc-min in size (certainly resolvable by cone's centralis vision) and the NV 1:1 phosphor rates 64 line pairs/mm At a 1-inch focal length (both objective AND eyep), that translates to about 2 arc-min (for the pair) --- which would be just comfortable to resolve the object. I'm also convinced that using the TWO NVs feedng BOTH eyes immensely reduces the scintillation. So there you have it - I can see the Horsehead at unity mag using Gen 3 NV True Binos. And that's pretty amazing! Has anyone else tried this?! If you think I'm nuts, I understand. Comments/observations welcome! Tom

I admit I have not looked into NV devices at all Thomas....can you post a link to some info on the monoculars you are referring to? Sounds pretty amazing.....

EVERYTHING I HATE ABOUT ASTROMART

I cant say there is anything I HATE about AM.....but it sure would be a major improvement to the forums if one were able to attach more than one image to a post. Makes doing a build topic a real pain in the butt having to post one image per post.

One other minor issue..... it always puts the image below the signature instead of in the body of the message....

Just a wish list lol

Unless you are complaining that you are NOT paying enough this is NOT the place to complain.

This is for things you don't like about the current version of AstroMart and what you think would make AstroMart BETTER

We do not buy off the shelf software. We pay thousands and thousands of dollars to make it the way YOU want it and want it to work

Now is YOUR chance to make the way YOU want it

The developers are monitoring the FORUM so you can talk DIRECT to them

Thank you
AstroMart LLC

I was just reminded of something that I really don't like regarding the forums..... I stay logged in all the time.

1. Whenever I open AM and there are new forum posts if I do not go read them during that session there is every likelihood that next time I open AM they will no longer be marked as new posts. Given I don't always have time to go thru the new posts but was perhaps just checking the new ads this can cause me to miss new posts to a topic I am following. It does seem to be a little sporadic in the tracking of this. As sometimes they will be marked as new for two or three visits and sometimes are gone even if you almost instantly open AM back up.

2. Once a post is read it does not always stay greyed out on subsequent visits or even during the same session so combined with the above it does at times make keeping up a chore.

It would be nice if the Classified list view listed the asking price. That way you wouldn't have to click on an add to see if it was a good deal or not. And yes the pics suck ;-)

lol.... you need to do some looking around....you get to choose what you want displayed including the price

Pet peeve re the forums

Posted By Greg Shaffer

A perfect example of one of the more frustrating things about the forums. Currently when I go into the forum I most participate in the new post status says there are 12 new messages. Yet when I actually go in an open the forum there are only 5 new posts to be found that actually have NEW beside them. Usually its not quite this blatantly inaccurate but is consistently inaccurate particularly regarding hot topics.

That combined with the inaccurate tracking of previously read posts ie they don't stay greyed out once read making it hard to keep your place in a conversation spread over multiple days and topics that get several pages long combined with the system not keeping the NEW flag between visits does make participating in the forums very frustrating at times.
