Saturn and Jupiter with cheap webcam

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I don't know if this is worthy to post in a CCD forum, but here is the best of my efforts so far.

Taken from Issaquah, WA
Vesta Pro webcam
Meade LX90 with 2x barlow
Both are 20 second exposures
Processed about 50 stacked images each with Skeye software
Some adjusting with Photoshop 6.0

ISS with webcam and LX90 Scope

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Ok, this isn't taken with a fancy SBIG or anythting super cool like that. I used the poor-man's CCD camera - a Vesta Pro webcam for this one.

I still have trouble getting the Autostar tracking to work right with satellites so this one is hand-guided. I got lucky and found this image in the 1000 that I took in the 5 minute pass over Seattle.

Email me and I'll send you a link to my web site with more images from the camera.

ISS/STS-112 over Seattle last week

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Here are some shots of the ISS as it passed over Seattle last week. Taken with a Vesta Pro webcam with 1/500th second shutter speed. Meade LX90, hand guided using the Telrad finder.

Probably my best Saturn yet!

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I took the best 63 frames out of about 4 different 1 minute .avi videos I took of saturn a few nights ago. I manually picked out the sharper frames using AVI2BMP software then ran the whole bunch through Registax. Some photoshop tweaking and here it is!

I think the focus need some work, and I'm still no expert at processing, and the seeing could have been better too. Overall, I'm pleased with the results.

Moon from last weekend

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Here is my newest moon photo I took last weekend. It was taken with a Mead LX90 at f/6.3 and a Vesta Pro webcam. It's a mosaic assembled from about 40 different smaller shots. Each piece was a 7 second .avi processed in Registax. I used iMerge software to put the mosaic together. Great software if you haven't tried it yet!

M20 from last night with SAC8

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Here is my best image from the Table Mountain star party from last night. It's my second attempt at using color filters with the SAC8. I've been using a webcam for a long time, so this camera pretty much set me back to beginnner levels again!

Great star party, I just wish I stayed 2 nights. So much to do, so much to see, and so little darkness this time of year. :-(

My backyard observatory so far....

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I still have a lot of work to do on it, but it's turning out well so far! Yeah, I know....I'm a dork for building an observatory in light polluted and rainy Renton, WA, but it will sure beat dragging stuff out in the yard when it is clear around here. Don't astronomers in Washington enjoy the hobby a lot more since we aren't spoiled with clear nights all the time? :-)

Anyway, you can see what I've bee doing here:
