Mexican Jay

I am at Kitt Peak for two nights of astrophotography (look later in the CCD imaging forum for the shots I took) and have spent some of my waking hours photographing the different birds I can see here. These Mexican Jays are common only at the top of the Peak, and are fairly tame, but very hard to photograph as the move so rapidly. This guy landed in the open in the afternoon sun and I was able to squeeze off a few shots. Nikon D100 and 80-400mm VR lens.

But since people are posting fisheye lens photos...not quite a fisheye, but a 17mm lens and a perspective that exaggerates the curvature of field. That's the 4m Mayall scope behind me this afternoon on Kitt Peak.

Great seeing tonight, I'm getting some excellent images.

This is my first-ever attempt at web-cam imaging. I think I can eventually get a much better picture as I learn what I am doing. This is a stack of the 100 best frames taken with a ToUCam Pro on the 20" RC at Kitt Peak, f/16.8.

M66 from Kitt Peak

I took this image in the early morning hours of January 18th with the 20" RC Optical Systems Ritchey-Chretien telescope in the Advanced Observer's Program (AOP). This is a 90:20:20:20 minute LRGB image. We had excellent seeing--about 1.4" for most of the shooting.

Just got around to processing it tonight. I am *very* happy with the results. Adam did help with correcting the bright star, but I processed the image and collected the data. I have two other images I will get around to posting sometime soon.

Pine Grosbeak

We're up north again with my in-laws and there is a lot of snow up here. My father-in-law wanted to see Pine Grosbeaks to add them to his life list, but they are not coming to our feeders right now. We went into town and hunted down crabapple trees hoping to find the grosbeaks as well Bohemian Waxwings, which have been reported in the area (and are very rare here). We found a tree with 6 pine grosbeaks, and no waxwings, but I was able to get some excellent photos. Nearly all of the photos came out great, but I think this is the best. This is reduced by 50% and slightly cropped--the detail at native resolution is remarkable. Nikon D100 and 80-400mm VR lens.

M42, M43 and NGC 1977

I took this image in the early morning hours of February 14th as I tested out my new AP400 GTO mount. This is a 60:14:14:14 LRGB image with an SBIG ST2000-XM and CFW8a on a Takahashi FS-60C.

This took about 8 layers in Photoshop to get the core to look just right.

Not ideal conditions--the transparency was not the best--but the result is pleasing nonetheless.

Reduced by 30% for the web.

M78 and Barnard's Loop and the new McNeil's Nebula

I took this image in the late hours of February 15th, 2004. This is a 90:30:30:30 minute LRGB exposure with an SBIG ST2000-XM and CFW8a, Takahashi FS-60C, on an Astro-Physics 400GTO mount.

My intention was to image the new nebula, McNeil's Nebula, and I did catch it. It is more easily seen in the orignal-sized image at: http://www.pbase.com/image/26124629. I also intentionally framed this to catch part of Barnard's Loop, which I have never imaged before.

Excellent transparency for the first 2.5 hours of this 3 hour shot.
