That's one great scope..
Makes me think about what would be mine, I 'think' (at least today LOL) it would be a really nice 8 inch Mak-Newt, carbon fiber tube, 8x60 finder AND red dot finder, with a NICE focuser on a GP-DX or Losmandy EQ mount. I think that would be a great all around scope. Big enough to see deep sky decent, enough aperture to see a lot on the planets, if it's figured well really sharp views, short enough F-ratio for wider field stuff, tracking, not to heavy, no tube currents.. Now if those stupid 6 numbers would come up on the lotto I could let you know how nice it really is! smile

So, all those defects WILL lower the resolution. I was thinking that was so...

Now, anyone have any idea (from theory or experience in comparing details in a side by side) how bad a bigger scope has to be to equal a smaller better scope? ( I know that's general but maybe someone has an actual 'experience they could site, like "I compared a Hardin 8 inch dob to my 5 inch mak newt and could see more fine detail with the mak, or the opposite, "A 10 Orion I looked through blew away my 4 inch apo for fine detail on Jupiter). Anything like that?

I'd love to know this too, we have this 'sun on a pole' behind us, it's in the south of course, grrr. Our power company ignores all requests for even a sheild on it.
It's so annoying, we even have to have blinds and curtains in our bedroom window as it lights that up too.

Aperture, optical quality and image

On this aperture and resolution thing, how about this..

Forgetting atmosphere, collimation, etc. Anyone have answers to these questions?

1) When one figures the resolution of a scope, it's usually given in arc seconds. Does this give the size of a 'pixel' that the scope 'sees'. ?

2) I did this, and posted it before, (I was assuming the answer to the above question was yes) I took a pic of Jupiter and overlayed a grid where each square represented an arc second. I also took a pic of Jupiter and made it's 'resolution' equivalent to what different size scope's "pixels" would be based on Jupiter having an apparant size of 50. Was that something that would represent a perfect scope, perfectly collimated, situated in zero atmosphere? (ie can one do this?)

I agree, isn't that annoying how you get teased with a super good night, then wait and wait for anything close?
Our skies aren't too hot either, in the winter we have the jet stream wandering overhead and when it's in the eclipic, bleh!

My "super night" was 2.5 years ago, I have yet to have one even 75% that good since. I hit over 500x that night, I saw a dark spot on Ganymede that night!

But, it's great to know that a good 8 inch SCT 'could' show me that much, that's good enough for me! smile

Re: 6 inch Apo- I have no experience, but from what I've seen people say on here, I'm betting in good skies your veiws will blow my picture away! Can't wait to hear how well it works for you,
