ED Glass in TeleVue 102?

Tele Vue has never disclosed the types of glass used in any of it's scopes besides that one element of the Genesis-SDF was a fluorite element (hence the "F"). I believe it was in the rear doublet rather than in the front doublet. Green lasers anyone? wink

doublet fluorite obsolete?

I would guess that people are demanding better colour correction for astrophotography than the FS doublets could provide, so Tak moved to triplets (TOA, TSA series) and other designs (FSQ series). I would also guess that they saw that they could achieve outstanding correction with ED glasses, saw that the market perception of ED glasses was fine, and went with it.

Minimum Aperture for Planetary Viewing?

When I lived in a NYC apartment, I exclusively used a 105mm f/5.8 APO (AP Traveler) for observing from the rooftop. I had many an enjoyable night with that scope and a few evenings of great seeing that stand out in memory - one in particular during a late 90's Mars apparition was amazing.

Would I want to be limited to 4" for planets for ever? No. But one can spend countless hours on the planets with no more than 4" and mostly be limited by the atmosphere and ones own observational skills.

Any advice for focusing routines? I just used the old put a star in the FOV, the camera in sub-frame quick exposure and turn the knobs till maximum counts hit. Bit of a guess with the natural random fluctuations. Is there any more modern way of doing this that people like?
