Observing with Normal Telescope

When observing with a refractor or reflector, not a dedicated solar scope, assuming the scope is properly equiped to protect the optics and oculars; what is the recommended filters/equip/etc.,that will help provide reasonable solar views. Right now I have a 12" dob that can be modified with an appropriate mask to provide up to a 4" aperture.

Best Non-Herschel I & II Objects

What are your favorite northern Hemisphere Non-Herschel I & II and Non-Messier DSOs? The other day Andreas Saldivar posted an exhaustive list of NGC and other objects observed at Petigrew State Park in NC. Most of the objects were not on either list. Dave Mitsky posts his monthly objects to be viewed. Several are not on the lists. What objects do you consider worthy that are not on the title lists?

A few that come to my mind are NGCs 1042, 1232 and 1291.

Small Nuclear Reactors!

Information is that small nuclear reactors will soon be produced. "The US government has licensed the technology to Hyperion, a New Mexico-based company". What was interesting in the article, is that none of the mentioned reactors for early production were scheduled to be installed in the US. Interesting that such important technology does not appear to be targeted for US Consumption. Where are our proponents for alternate energy sources? Are we missing the boat again here?

Pittsburg Point Spread

My son pointed out to me that a controversal review of a game play that had no effect on the outcome of the game. Apparently a botched review negated a Pittsburg defensive touchdown at the end of the game. The significance of the call led to an impact on the point spread of the game. Makes you wonder about the 12 penalties called on Pittsburg during the game; more penalties than points. Any thoughts?

While you guys are comtemplating our abuse of energy and how to complicate our infrastructure more in order to idiot-proof our insatiable demand for power, it is time for my ride. Please note my most recent power saving purchase perched on the sadle. It is designed for those short trips to the grocery/post office/hardware store. It can save a lot of gas so that others won't have to run out.

Lead Acid Batteries?

Does anyone have any recommendation/cautions about using a lead-acid battery vs a sealed battery for powering heaters/fans? The lowest output I have seen have been in the 160 amp range, vs the 12 amp sealed battery. The cost differential is substantial; $45 for the sealed vs $23 for a small equipment battery. What am I missing here?

US Light Pollution Map Overlay on Google Earth

Does anyone know how to overlay the entire US light pollution map on to Google Earth without doing it segment by segment? Right now I have a multitude of areas, but would like to do it in one fell swoop. Not sure what a fell swoop is, but it sounds right.

Looked it up. Quite deadly it seems. Perhaps not apropos but adequate.

A recent poster mentioned the Collins I-3 Image Intensifier eyepiece in his profile writeup. It sounds interesting but the price is quite high for a "check it out" EP. Has anyone else had experience with this item?

The other night I noticed that my 2" EPs seemed to wobble in the focusser. Upon further investigation, it appeared the tapered barrels on the 28UWAN and 40 Paragon do not mesh well with the brass expansion ring and the only way to get the EPs to fit snugly is to raise them somewhat in the focusser. My thoughts had been to get a better focusser, however, now it is not apparent that this problem will go away. Considering the weight of the 28 UWAN, it still seems that a better focusser is in order, perhaps something designed to manage imaging equipment. Any help out there?

New Sunspot!

Was wondering if the observers back during the Maunder Minimum would have noticed this sunspot. After cliking on the image, the spot was not obvious to me. Plus, it should disappear shortly. Clearly we have criteria to help us identify SSs as they develop, a method not available to the "ancients".
