WHAT IS RICHARD RHINKING

" Federal prosecutors with the special counsel’s office issued a subpoena to the Trump Organization for information regarding business deals in foreign countries, according to two sources familiar with the investigation."
"One of the sources suggested investigators appear to be focused on former President Donald Trump’s business dealings in countries that could have possibly been interested in the types of classified materials recovered from Trump after he left office."
"The Trump Organization had said it would not strike new deals with foreign countries during Trump’s presidency."

Much of the debt is due to the spending that occurred under Trump which the Republicans in congress enabled along with the tax cuts, principally benefiting the top 1%, that the Republicans claimed would pay for themselves but didn't. Those are the main reasons why we have to raise the debt ceiling now.

See:
"It was unbelievable at the time, and it's proven to be absolutely untrue," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. "The tax cuts were never going to — and have not — come anywhere close to paying for themselves."
"Corporate tax revenues fell 31% in the first year after the cut was passed. Overall tax revenues have declined as a share of the economy in each of the two years since the tax cut took effect."

Fast forward to today, and we have Republicans in congress blaming Biden for what they and Trump enacted...

I thought we already covered spending under Trump: EIGHT TRILLION!
That's the debt that we're servicing!
Now back to Trump's tax cuts:
05.16.23
Extending Trump Tax Cuts Would Add $3.5 Trillion to the Deficit, According to CBO
New report finds Republicans’ giveaways to the wealthy and large corporations are significantly more costly than previously estimated.

Coming back on topic after Rich does what he usually does and hijacks a thread he doesn't like or when he's constantly shown to be wrong in whatever he posts.
Matt Gaetz says it out loud in discussing how he and his "colleagues" feel about the debt ceiling :
"...they don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.”
"White House officials Wednesday put a spotlight to remarks by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) in which he said some Republicans do not feel they should negotiate with their “hostage” in debt ceiling talks."
“This is a manufactured crisis, plain and simple,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a briefing."
“They’re saying the quiet thing out loud, referring to the full faith and credit of the United States as a ‘hostage,’” she added, as Gaetz’s quote was displayed on a screen over her shoulder."

And it's not a lie to say that without the Democrats, the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s would never have passed. And the Democrats did vote more than the Republicans in the 1960s legislation (which is what I was always talking about). Making this all about the 1957 Act is some major goalpost moving on your part.
It's more than just moving the goalposts, it's all about deflection, diversion, hijacking and then claiming on some nuanced historical past action that you're either "lying" or "doubling down" in some sort of perceived "gotcha" moment. It's what the MAGA's and their right wing media do, it's what turds do, it's right out of their playbook...

It's a mixed bag from the latest number I could find:
"Number of hate groups declined in 2021, but Proud Boys chapters surging,"
"In its annual report, released Wednesday, the Southern Poverty Law Center said it identified 733 active hate groups in 2021, down from the 838 counted in 2020 and the 940 counted in 2019. Hate groups had risen to a historic high of 1,021 in 2018, said the law center, which tracks racism, xenophobia and far right militias."
“Rather than demonstrating a decline in the power of the far right, the dropping numbers of organized hate and anti-government groups suggest that the extremist ideas that mobilize them now operate more openly in the political mainstream,” says the new report, shared with The Associated Press ahead of its release."

Actually the warning is coming from the department of homeland security. The DHS has just announced:
"Simmering grievances, political divides, a steady proliferation of online neo-Nazi propaganda, and the approach of the 2024 presidential election are keeping the United States stuck in a “heightened threat environment,” according to the latest warning from U.S. homeland security officials."
The Department of Homeland Security reissued a National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin Wednesday, saying a combination of anger, ideologies and opportunities “pose a persistent and lethal threat to the Homeland.”

Biden's assurance that white extremism is the gravest terror threat facing the US is political and will not age well when the next 9-11 happens.
Gosh Jim, I'm shocked you're buying into Greg explanation, which is the same nonsense you see from playbooks of right wing blogs and NRA-type stuff, that ya got 321 million people in the country so the few thousand extremists or the ongoing mass shootings don't amount to a hill of beans and it's all "politics".  I guess if you accept that kind of explanation, then there shouldn't be an FBI most wanted list (is that "political" too?), and/or relatively few people die in fires each year compared to the 321 million we got left so why fund fire departments, etc. Where do you draw the line Jim? How many cases and perps of seditious conspiracy are acceptable? Are they political prisoners, too?

1.  I have always supported the prosecution and jailing of actual criminals, especially the Jan 6 seditionists.   I've posted on this extensively, I agree with you on the prosecutions, and I fully support law enforcement rooting out and prosecuting criminal extremists, and I always have, as I have posted here for years.

So, your characterization of my view as, "so the few thousand extremists or the ongoing mass shootings don't amount to a hill of beans and it's all "politics"... is hogwash.   I was probably not careful enough when I wrote my original post to make my law and order stance clear.   You did read all of the posts I have made supporting the prosecutions, within the bounds of due process?   When you say something like, "Where do you draw the line Jim? How many cases and perps of seditious conspiracy are acceptable? Are they political prisoners, too?"  you are clearly arguing with someone who is not me.

2.  Do you understand the above?  Hopefully yes.   Then my thought two is this:  The democrats and the left-sympathetic portion of the press have over-politicized the actual threat posed by right wing extremism to a nation as robust as ours.  Of course they did, it is hard-ball politics!

So, those are my two thoughts.   Summarized as this:  (A) "Criminal Justice in a Nation of Laws" >>>> Prosecute the bastards to the extent provided by law.  Root out their cells and toss them in jail, to the extend consistent with due process and other constitutional safeguards.   There is no way you will find me defending criminals who are duly prosecuted.   They are dangerous and the law exists to protect society from these bastards.

(B)  "Politics"  >>>> Those who say we almost lost the nation on Jan 6, or those who say that white supremist terrorism is the greatest threat facing the nation today are playing politics.   You don't have to agree with me, but please don't extrapolate this political point of view into some sort of "How many cases and perps of seditious conspiracy are acceptable?"  The answer is zero are acceptable (duh).   I can say this, knowing that zero is not practical, and also without thinking that anything more than zero means the end of democracy in the United States.
I was responding , in particular, to your statement of, "I agree primarily with Greg.  Rod, the DHS and the political establishment have a political interest in inflating the threat posed by white racist extremists."
I disagree with your aforementioned premise and all that goes with. The DHS made it determinations regarding right wing extremist groups primarily during the years of Trump administration and if there was political influence impacting its decisions, they surely would have been different under the direction of the Trump team with the latter appointing the director of DHS at the time...
PS: Hope everyone has a nice Memorial Day holiday as we remember those who've kept our nation out of harm's way...
