Jupiter

...reworking the 01/11 Jupiter image I came up with this. It was another image I took with a lot more gain set. This is probably a better way to do it.

Can a Meade GPS be stored outside?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Darren,

Consider that observatory scopes are "stored" covered in essentially "outside" conditions for years, I would say it should not be a problem as long as it stays dry and protected. I keep my C8 outside 24/7 with no aparent problems.

Jupiter with TMB 8" F/9

Jim,

Very nice!! It's interesting how that little dark spot has caught up with the GRS. The next couple of weeks are going to be interesting to see how it interacts as it passes the spot.

Lonnie,

Just a suggestion, if you make the image greyscale, the odd little yellow areas go away and the image probably would look even better. It's a heck of a nice image as it is.

Meade 7-inch Mac vs Celestron 9.25

Posted By Paul Maxson

I would take the 9.25 for two reasons personally.

1. Larger aperature...both are excellent planetary scopes from what i read.
2. A buddy of mine has a 7" Mac and tells me that it takes about 2 hrs for the glass to reach air temp. My C8 takes about 10-15 minutes typically.

Other than that, either would be a good planetary scope IMHO.

Jupiter 1/23/04 - TEC200 Mak

Angel,

Very nice!! It looks like that little spot near the GRS has advenced a bit and maybe even flattened as well. This really bears watching over the next couple of weeks.

Just a thought...

Ivan,

I can't agree more!! I love seeing what others are doing and it pushes me to try harder...to go outside when it's cold not knowing what can turn out.

I think it would be fun to take a look at the images in the June 2003 S&T article about webcamming and see how the current crop stacks up. I'll bet those images that were jaw dropping at the time will look almost normal now.

The Meade catalogue shows an image taken by Damian Peach of Saturn with a 12" showing the little south polar cap, and they said it was an extremely difficult object to photograph, it's only 1200 miles in diameter. Yet I see it plainly on images from Wes and others, and I think I can even see it on one or two of my Saturn images as well.

I saw another challenge. In a 2002 issue of S&T (I forget which issue), they show a picture of the mon shot with an 8.2 meter scope where they claim to see objects to I thought 130 meters across, maybe less. I think it would be fun to image that area and see how much of the 8.2 meter's image we can see!!
