Prop 30 or Wish I Had Understood it Before!!!

This is more scary than the entrepreneur angle...

A precedent has been set with Prop 30. What would stop voters or legislators from passing a 100 percent top marginal rate extending back to 2010? You might scoff at the notion, but the state has now determined it can legally reach into individuals’ savings accounts and take money out on a whim.

"California’s entrepreneurs are hit particularly hard by Prop 30. Why? Because entrepreneurs often invest their life savings and go for years with a low or zero salary. Most start-up ventures end up failing in the end. But in those rare cases when something of great value is created and a meaningful liquidity event takes place (usually in the form of an acquisition or IPO), nearly all the money earned from the undertaking hits at one time. Instead of the income being spread evenly over the life of the company (the average time to exit for venture-backed start-ups is 7 or 8 years), a single once-in-a-lifetime event occurs such that eight years of income shows up in the single year, making entrepreneurs highly vulnerable to the top marginal tax rate."

@JerryBrown - I promise I won't ask for anything else every again

There is only one rational answer for you guys who own businesses in CA...

I believe it is a Great Horned Owl. It stuck around for a few photos and then flew off. I thought it was a bit odd since it was maybe 3 pm but it was kind of cloudy/gloomy. Lots of rabbits in the neighborhood so its good hunting grounds. I just hope the folks with the Yorkies and other small dogs have them inside. We quickly made sure our cat was inside.

Hi Pete:

Good looking owl! We hear them hooting now and then but don't see them that often.

Illinois where only criminals will have guns

I foresee a lot of "boating accidents" in Illinois this week.
Confiscate from and handcuff the lawabiding man. As if the criminals will follow the law!
I'm sick of these knee-jerk reactionary idiots!

Dave:

The bill described in that article, (banning pistols and shotguns...? Did I read that right?) would be completely and unambiguously unconstitutional under recent binding Supreme Court precedent. I'm not prepared to say that the Illinois legislature is not that stupid, but my guess is that this article is either making up the content of the bill or wildly exaggerating it's scope.

Hi Greg:

That video clip is easily refuted. http://www.astromart.com/forums/viewpost.asp?forum_post_id=799806&oll_id=&news_id=&ge=2

The author is correct that defense against local or foreign tyranny was a big part of it, but he are taking one aspect of the founder's concerns and elevating it to supremacy. The founders thought that a permanent professional army was highly risky, therefore they favored part time militias. The founders were right in 1790. In 2013, the militia concept is not so relevant. To the extent that this editorialist is trying to write personal self defense (from criminals) or hunting and target shooting out of the 2nd Amendment he is walking a risky path that could arguably lead to Constitutional gun bans.

What do they know about the constitution, anyway?

Is anyone suggesting that these very minor adjustments to reasonable current practices are unconstitutional? Rod, did you notice that the forum right wing is mocking Obama's executive orders as "shooting blanks" down below?

I'm waiting for the gun control lobby to turn on Obama and demand magazine and assault rifle bans. Surely yesterday's executive orders can't be what the anti-gun crowd had in mind.

I'd hate to think I'm part of the problem and I know I'm from Earth, but some of these tid-bits just aren't true. (I also enjoy being argumentative on a Friday afternoon...) 8)

You have to have your parents signature to go on a school field trip but not to get an abortion.

I'm pretty sure that minors need parental consent to get an abortion (in most states) Please correct me if I'm wrong. Children over the age of 18 might not need parental consent, but they don't need consent to go on field trips either.

An 80 year old woman can be stripped searched by the TSA but a Muslim woman in a burka is only subject to having her neck and head searched.

I doubt that the TSA is limited in their search parameters by the faith of the search victim. sounds like an urban legend to me.

p.s. it is an urban legend: http://www.examiner.com/article/are-muslim-women-exempt-from-screening-other-tsa-myths

The Supreme Court of the United States can rule that lower courts cannot display the 10 Commandments in their courtroom, while sitting in front of a display of the 10 Commandments.

This is simply incorrect. It is entirely constitutional to display the 10 commandments in a courtroom. See Van Orden v. Perry, 545 U.S. 677 (2005)

You know you live in a Country run by idiots if...
Politicians think that stripping away the amendments to the constitution is really protecting the rights of the people.

Seriously? No amendments have been stripped away; ever. (Well, the right to drink was stripped once upon a time, but that was fixed with another amendment.) Rest assured that the 1st and 2nd Amendments will outlive the Nation, given our splendid system of checks and balances.

You know you live in a Country run by idiots if...
The rights of the Government come before the rights of the individual.

More political opinion here - and one I certainly don't agree with. the Bill of Rights says otherwise for one thing. For example, you can post on this blog all day long that Obama is a wretched criminal and no jack-booted thugs will come knocking. Try that in China.... the rights of the individual reign supreme here, and bless the founders that this is so.

Being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you "safe".

Wake me up when any troubling gun control legislation is introduced, much less passed at the national level.

Troubling Aspect of Red Light Camera's

Posted By James Brown

Russ Carroll said:

I got a ticket in the mail for a red light camera violation. The car is registered to me, but it's used by a family member. The photo is clearly not me, and the ticket say's if it's not you, tell us who it is.

I'm going to court instead and plead not guilty, which is clear from the evidence. If the judge asks me who it is, my response will be something like:

"With all respect, I'm here to defending myself against a violation I clearly did not do, not to accuse someone else of a crime. It strikes me as almost un American to be put in a position to accuse someone of a crime, or face a penalty myself. for something I have no knowledge of."

I despise red light cameras on GP, but this really does seem wrong to me.

Thoughts?

Hi Russ:

In Colorado, the robo-ticket asks you who the perp is, but it is not required that you answer. I have gotton one or two of the speeding variety in my wife's car and vice-versa. Also, (In Colorado) a robo-ticket is not a criminal matter. You can allegedly be forced to pay a fine, but there are no points against your license and no possible jail time. I have heard much speculation that you can just blow these tickets off, but I have no first hand experience with that angle. The due process requirements for an actual criminal matter can probably never be met with a red light camera.

Every state probably has somewhat different rules and implementation strategies, so take anything anyone says on line with a grain of salt.

Maybe we need better axe control laws? wink
