Re: good webcam planet under poor seeing condition

Posted By Paul Maxson

I managed to get decent images under fairly poor seeing conditions. I took the confirming photo of Don Parker's discovery image of the large scale dust storm on Mars back in december. I remember thinking that the seeing was so bad that Mars didn't look right. After I processed the image, I got a decent Mars, but more importantly I got the dust storm, which at that time showed 5 lobes. Bottom line, if it's clear, give it a shot. There was only 2 or 3 times that I didn't image after I set up because of seeing. I consider that even my worst webcam image is better than over 90% of my wet film images from years past.

Jupiter 3.15.04

Vincent,

Is it hand guided? If so, I'm truly impressed!! That's a heck of a nice image from a Dob.

Keep it up!!

Help a newbie, please?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Bill,

First...heck of a nice setup!! Second, when you go from prime focus to the powermate, the focus point changes considerably. Set the gain all the way up and exposure to 1/25, then put the powermate in and try again. You should see a "donut" like object, focus on that. Re-adjust gain and exposure time after getting a rough focus. It's best to make sure your object is centered at prime focus before adding the powermate as the field of view (FOV) is much less. For me when I go from prime focus on my C8 to the 2.5x powermate, I have a fairly large refocus.

Good luck!!

max FL for Toucam chip

I have a 5x Powermate and have used it twice for imaging with my C8. You can see one image here:

There is a huge difference in quality of image from the 3x televue and 5x powermate. I love the powermate for visual use, but probably will never use it for imaging. Jupiter darn near filled the field of view on the C8.

The folks who use the 5x on dobs are using it with typically F/4 - F/4.5 systems and it gets them to about F/25 or F/30, which seems to be the sweet spot on focal ratio for webcam imaging.

Clear Sky Clock

Same here, just an empty spot on my web page where the Clear Sky Clock should be. Wonder if they got hit by a DOS...
