"Islam at its purest"

That is what this lead article in "The Atlantic" calls ISIS:

Wake the F up, world. These are basically fundamentalist Muslims that want to usher in the end of the world, and their numbers are rapidly growing worldwide.

Good article. The dangerous distinctions between ISIS and al'Qaeda are particularly well spelled out. al'Qaeda comes out looking nearly civilized by comparison.

The final conclusion is particularly chilling:

"That the Islamic State holds the imminent fulfillment of prophecy as a matter of dogma at least tells us the mettle of our opponent. It is ready to cheer its own near-obliteration, and to remain confident, even when surrounded, that it will receive divine succor if it stays true to the Prophetic model. Ideological tools may convince some potential converts that the group’s message is false, and military tools can limit its horrors. But for an organization as impervious to persuasion as the Islamic State, few measures short of these will matter, and the war may be a long one, even if it doesn’t last until the end of time."

But other passages are somewhat optimistic:

"Given everything we know about the Islamic State, continuing to slowly bleed it, through air strikes and proxy warfare, appears the best of bad military options. Neither the Kurds nor the Shia will ever subdue and control the whole Sunni heartland of Syria and Iraq—they are hated there, and have no appetite for such an adventure anyway. But they can keep the Islamic State from fulfilling its duty to expand. And with every month that it fails to expand, it resembles less the conquering state of the Prophet Muhammad than yet another Middle Eastern government failing to bring prosperity to its people."

Nice to read some strong deep analysis.

Now it's the 3 stooges...or is this a topic I should pretend doesn't exist too? It's tougher than I thought being re-reformed politically. Is it all the time that I should avoid certain facts, or just some of the time? Thanks in advance yet again.

Hi Mark:

For better or worse, I think that this is typical. Legislation is often (maybe usually) drafted by industry groups, interest groups, advocates, trade associations and so forth. The legislature is supposed to fully debate the proposed legislation, no matter who wrote it. I doubt the debate happens as effectively as it should.

If only it were amusing

If lying to Congress is reason enough, why was there no rush to impeachment of W? He lied to Congress and the American people in order to gain support for going to war against Iraq. Any, and I mean any political party that believes lying to Congress about getting a blowjob is worthy of the impeachment of a President, yet believes a President deceiving us in order to gain support for the invasion of a foreign country is acceptable, is a party that places their interests ahead that of the United States of America.

Hi Mark:

Whether or not Bush "lied" in the traditional sense of the word "lie" is still hotly contested. Assuming that W did lie, he lied in speeches to the public. Obama should not be impeached for the lie of "if you like you policy/doctor..." made on numerous occasions to the public. This kind of lie is not nearly an impeachable offense in my view.

Clinton was not impeached for lying to the public.

Clinton lied while giving sworn testimony, (while under oath). This is a big deal. he was disbarred as a lawyer for this, as would any lawyer who was caught in a lie under oath. The impeachment was politically motivated of course, and in retrospect a political miscalculation (same deal with Nixon in my view) but the impeachment was fully justified.

Certainly, as a lawyer, I am more sensitive to the crime committed by those who would lie under oath. But, in my view, lying under oath should be considered a really big deal by all who value our system of justice.

(with the exception of when national security was compromised as a result).

Hi Mark:

I'm curious - given that national security is important to you, are you as worried about Hillary's private email server as I am?

I know quite well that the right will over-do this issue. Even so, I personally think that this alone disqualifies her as a candidate and I would much rather have Ms. Clinton as president than Elizabeth Warren or Joe Biden if it came to that.

Any executive at a large corporation who did what Hillary did with respect to business emails would end up in jail. This is not ambiguous under various statutes.
