Processing question

Posted By Paul Maxson

We have found that "ringing" is caused when the gain is set too low. Your ringing looks about normal for a gain of 30% to me, but try increasing gain to about 50% and see what happens. I set my brightness to about 150-170 on the K3CCD intensity scale, but you can experiment here too. The image looks quite nice to me but a program like Photoshop or my choice, Paint Shop Pro 8.1, would be a help too. In fact, here is how your image turned out when I ran my specialized "Planetary Macro" in Paint Shop Pro. Hope you like it.

Enjoy!!

Jupiter again 03/31/04

Wes,

Very nice image!! It's just got to feel good being at the eyepiece again!!

We got someone's weather today...a summer type thunderstorm rolled through tonight. Since what we get in Az usually ends up in Texas/Oklahoma...heads up!! smile

Io transit?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Mauricio,

Assuming it was taken at 2236UT, that would be the shadow of Io. It would have been a nice picture opportunity if the seeing had cooperated as Ganymede was just off the right side of the planet as you have it oriented.

Barlow, Powermate, OCS?

Posted By Paul Maxson

At F/4.3 you could add a 4x or 5x Powermate and do well. Wes Higgins has a setup similar to your's and his awe-inspiring images are shot with a 5x Powermate.

Good luck!!

First image (Archimedes) DMK21F04 Firewire camera

Wes,

I would say you should be excited!! I hope you try this on Jupiter at least once. Remember back in the old days of wet photography all we ever shot of the planets was black and white.

Nice start and I can't wait to see more images.

solar filter question

Posted By Paul Maxson

Personally I prefer the film filters. I've had two glass filters and didn't like either, although I'm sure there are some very, very good ones out there. For years I bought filters from Roger Tuthill, but for my latest filter I bought Baader material and built my own. The Tuthill filters were very nice, the Baader blows it away. Unless you plan to do actual wet photography, go with the visual grade filter, not the photographic grade. The photo grade is thinner and designed for the slow, small grain films we used in the 70's and 80's. With CCD now, you can use visual grade for imaging and still get a very pleasing view visually.

Moon Straight Wall 04-28-04

Steve,

Nice image and to answer your question...I always convert to greyscale on the moon, but after I capture the image not during...seems to come out better that way. Hope to see more from that C11 of yours!!
