"The House Jan. 6 committee’s final report asserts that Donald Trump criminally engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the lawful results of the 2020 presidential election and failed to act to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol, concluding an extraordinary 18-month investigation into the former president and the violent insurrection two years ago."
"Trump “lit that fire,” the committee’s chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, writes."

BTW, thanks for derailing my otherwise rather friendly thread on the eclipse.

Yeah he did do it yesterday in Ohio just like he does in every other speech he makes when he starts off with his patriots and hostages in prison bullshit. Get it yet?

BTW, this is a political forum and if you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen...

CNN: Father of Michigan school shooter found guilty of manslaughter weeks after mother’s conviction

At least Michigan is trying to do something about the access of guns by children.

After all is said and done these parents were awful and deserved what they got.
"So, you think this will do anything to make gun owners a little bit more cautious about how they store their guns?"

No, not enough to make a difference in these kinds of cases. Those parents that behave like the ones who were just found guilty by a jury of their peers are likely to do the same regardless of the outcome in this case.

Additionally, looking at right wing reactions, I found this:

"In the eyes of legal experts, like FOX 2's Charlie Langton, this decision puts guardians on notice:"

"Now, parents beware, because if your kids do something really bad - like a crime - the cops are going to come to you. And in this case, they put Jennifer Crumbly in handcuffs while they questioned her at the station," he said.

"They're going to look at your text messages. They're going to look at your phone records. They're going to look at where you are. Is this an invasion of your privacy? No, it's not because a crime was committed. And I think this case is going to extend the long arm of the law to these parents."

https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/jennifer-crumbley-found-guilty-of-involuntary-manslaughter-in-oxford-school-shooting-trial

So, it seems the big bad gubermint is coming for you,  and you know how the right wing reacts to that...

Will SCOTUS Bail Out Navarro?

"Fetish"? Seriously?

I guess granting Navarro a reprieve was a bridge too far for even the cons on the court since Roberts refused to do it but really, Jim,  if one of 'em would do it wouldn't your guess be Clarence?...

Any opinion on this?
I haven't been following this as closely as I should but some takeaways thus far:

"Alito accuses Biden admin of ‘pestering Facebook’"

"Alito described what the government did as a “constant pestering of Facebook.”

“It’s treating Facebook and these other platforms like they’re subordinates,” Alito told Brian Fletcher, an attorney representing the Biden administration. “Would you do this to the New York Times?”

WTF?!

As for the rest of 'em:

"The Supreme Court on Monday appeared deeply skeptical of arguments by two conservative states that the First Amendment bars the government from pressuring social media platforms to remove online misinformation."

BTW Jim, what's your opinion on this action by Cannon:

I can sorta see why the Anti-Trump journalists are apoplectic.  The hypotheticals are very pro-Trump.  The apoplectic sort might be freaking out a bit prematurely though.  As best I can tell, Cannon is not saying that these will be jury instructions, she seems to be asking Smith and Trump's lawyers to argue for or against the use of the obviously pro-Trump hypotheticals.

My first impression is that these are the issues she should resolve by granting or denying Trump's pending motions to dismiss.  According to the Washington Post she is hostile to Trump's arguments:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2024/03/18/trump-judge-cannon-jury-instructions-pra/  (I recommend this article, it seems analytical and free from hysteria).

I can not figure out why she wants more arguments on these issues in the jury instruction context.   Maybe she is just being cautious.   Maybe she is totally incompetent.   Either way this is not the end of the world order that MSNBC paints it as.   She hasn't actually made any order on the instructions to be presented to a jury yet.  (Also, if she dismisses the case there will be no jury instructions, so this is sorta a signal that she is not going to dismiss)  What matters a lot is what she orders on instructions after the lawyers weigh in and when she ultimately does decide Trump's motions to dismiss.
It appears we're all trying to understand what she is doing or intending to do with this jury instruction business but when you listen to the MSNBC contributors and then read the following, it certainly seems that she's not approaching this in any sort of conventional manner:

"Some commentators have described Cannon’s order as 'unusual.' I would use words like wacko, crazy, loony, nutty, ridiculous, and outlandish, and my terms are probably understatements," Bennett Gershman, a Pace University law professor and former New York prosecutor, told Salon."

Upon reflection, what she is doing makes perfect sense:

1. In reality, anyone else would have been tried, convicted and serving time by now, especially considering the degree and willfulness of the magnitude in this case.

2. Trump's presence in the court on multiple occasions coupled by the multitude of favorable delays and decisions for him by Cannon is a matter of public record.

3. Cannon apparently has a quid pro quo with Trump that upon further delays and favorable rulings upon his behalf, she will be considered for advancement to SCOTUS upon retirement of Clarence Thomas who has been signaling his desire to do so for quite some time in order to live a life of luxury. The latter will likely be accommodated by the generous gifts from the billionaires associated with the federalist society in order to show their appreciation for his "conservative philosophy".

Sound about right?....

Cannon may be biased for Trump, I don't know.   (Of course the judges in GA, DC, and NY are almost certainly biased against Trump, and those cases have not rushed to judgement.)   So, it is not supportable in my opinion to argue that the bias of the judge is responsible for slow walking this case.   Complex criminal prosecutions with defendants who can afford decent counsel always take time.   No one would care but for the election in November and again, that is not a valid reason to discard due process.

It is ridiculous to think that Trump would nominate an extremely new district court judge to the Supreme Court.  The part I have bolded above is ridiculous and unsupported slander.   MSNBC is not even going this far, and they are way into the weeds of partisan speculation.  J

Actually, I got the idea from them, specifically, Lawrence O' Donnell.

As far as the amount of time it takes, the best I could find on a google search for similar cases is 12-18 months. Seems like it's been a lot longer than that for Trump and I disagree that no one would care if not for the November elections...
