Plato-reprocessed/neat image software

Mike,

Well, I lost count on about 35 craters. Yeah, I'd say you did a bangup job on the image!!

It's been so hot and unstable out here near Phoenix, I haven't dared taking the telescope out all week.

Nice image!!

I think that is what Herschel would have built if he had been born 100 years later... wink

Wes,

Nice image!! I do believe I see at least parts of the rille in the Alpine Valley! Quite an accomplishment with such a wide angle.

Large Binocular Telescope threatened by wildfires

Posted By Paul Maxson

Victor,

I live near Phoenix and every morning I wake wondering how those fires are doing and if our firefighters will be able to keep them from the scopes. We nearly had the same problem last summer too. This lack of rain is a major problem. Those fires were lightning caused and the big worry is that we are entering our "monsoon" season. The air is so dry we could get little rain and a lot of lightning. Not a good combination!! We need everyone to keep their fingers crossed!!

A Mini-Lunar Vacation

Meteor Crater is a fascinating place, isn't it? I was there many years ago and enjoyed the time. I was part of a hot air balloon team at the time and we had been contracted by a Hollywood movie company to film our balloon flying out of the bottom of the crater. We had to scout most of the bottom for a good setup spot, then after all was said and done it was too windy to fly...ah well!! Glad you had a chance to see it.

focal reducer for webcam

Posted By Paul Maxson

Andre,

You can get such a focal reducer here also, it is a standard 1.25" screw and will screw onto any thing that a standard filter will screw onto. I have not tried them as yet, but they look ok on the web page.

Good to hear, it makes sense as it's the 35th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.

Thanks for passing that along!!

Spot seen with the naked eye?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Nathan,

You were seeing a sunspot, it is AR 652 (the official name, see it at http://www.spaceweather.com/ ). It has been naked eye for a few days. Definately get a solar filter (Baader is an excellent make, find them at http://www.kendrick-ai.com/astro/solarfilters.html . Solar observing can be very rewarding and fun...plus you can use the filter to look at the sun minus the scope, which would be much safer.

Clear skies!!
