TeleVue 4mm Radian

Posted By James Robinson

Hi,
I have a TV-85 with a 4mm radian and use the combination almost every night. It's interesting seeing the comments that the 3 is too much. At 150x (4mm) the image on Saturn and Jupiter does not appear close to breaking down. I have also been surprised at how great M42 looks with the 4mm. Bottom line -- I think it's a great combination.

Ghosting with Expanse EP (6mm)

Thanks Bob, I will try that. I do suspect the negative element is the main culprit. I used the e.p. without it and the ghosting disappeared. Of course that was also at much lower power.

Vixen/Orion BT-80's

Posted By James Robinson

Is there any real advantage to binoscopes such as the BT-80 versus, say, a slightly larger refractor with a good binoviewer? Theoretically I can't see any and the refractor binoviewer combination is much easier to mount. The combination including the mount would be much less expensive and arguable better optically.

I'm a big fan of binoculars in general but don't undestand the niche for these large ones that are essentially 2 refractors.

This is really excellent, what equipment did you use to get this shot?

Mourning Dove

That's a very nice photo, incredibly sharp. We have nearly identical equipment and I haven't yet achieved such sharp focus. Any pointers or tricks you care to share? My best results so far have been to manually focus with the scope focuser then let the camera autofocus. I do use the timer of course.

Any tips appreciated!

Great blue heron feeding

Thanks for the tip, it makes perfect sense. I used auto mode with default settings for most of these shots, I really need to study the coolpix manual. Also, I realized you need to practice this in advance, all those settings and dials are overwhelming in the field.

Another red winged blackbird

Thanks. I keep practicing. These birds are really sharp through the eyepiece. This "river" is right down the street from my house, there are redwings and cackles everywhere. A snowy egret showed up today.
