Specimen storage

I was on a pretty good buying spree for a while and the specimens were really piling up, waiting to be inventoried and organized. While I'd like to make some nice display cases, I just don't have the time right now, so I made do by getting a few of those Plano plastic storage boxes. They have adjustable dividers so you can make different sized compartments. I made most of mine big enough to accomadate a specimen card, so I could lay the card in first with the specimen on top of it. It's not the greatest, but at least they're somewhat organized now. And they won't get mixed up! I'll try to get a photo to post soon.

Huntington Gardens

Made a trip out to a very nice botanical garden in Pasedena a couple week ends ago.
There are numerous areas representing various types of vegetation,
but the desert section was especially appealing this time of year.

Stephen Hawking lecture

I had the good fortune of hearing Stephen Hawking speak at CalTech, in Pasedena last Wednesday evening.
The topic was "Black Holes: Not as Black as They are Painted."
Apparently I should have taken off work early and lined up at noon, as I was approximately number 2500 in line for the 500 free seats available. Oops. I ended up huddled around one of two loudspeakers outside the auditorium with a couple hundred other unfortunate souls. Quite fortunate though, to be there at all. It was quite an experience to hear him in real time, even if I couldn't see him. His inspiring words were sprinkled with delightful humor. After his fairly brief lecture, he fielded 5 interesting questions chosen from submittals from CalTech students. Afterwards, he was wheeled right out the front doors, along the side of the building, to his waiting wheelchair-van. The crowd of camera wielding fans and well wishers was more like what one would expect for a rock star. All in all, it was a remarkable event, and I'm really glad I made it.
Despite my severe IQ disadvantage, I feel a certain kinship with him.

Joshua Tree the morning after...

I took an observing/desert wildflower trip out to Joshua Tree last Friday and Saturday.
The observing was pretty good once the moon set,
and the desert wildflowers kept me well entertained the next day!
We entered the park just after sunset...

I think I'll work on the Canyon Diablos next. For next week.
I have quite a few of those, and some of them are pretty interesting.

Utah sunrise

Took another trip up to Utah a while back.
It was cloudy in the evening, so I didn't set up the scope,
but I woke up before dawn, and seeing it had cleared up,
went out and watched as night began to end.

Scenic Drive through Capitol Reef

Took a drive into Capitol Reef N.P. where the sky was cloudy,
but the filtered sunlight coming from the west lit up the
multi-layered rock, creating a very dramatic effect!

Old Woman meteorite

You may be familiar with this famous meteorite.
It's story is told in Rocks from Space, and probably other books.
Except for the 900 lb slice removed by the Smithsonian, this huge specimen
is on display at the BLM's (Mojave) Desert Discovery Center in Barstow, CA.
I frequently drive through Barstow, on the way to and from Utah,
and I thought I was finally going to get to stop and see it last week. grin
Unfortunately, the center is closed on Mondays, so I'll have to keep trying. :S
