Canada Elects Liberal In Response To Trump/Auto Tariffs

"Howard Lutnick says ‘deal’ has been reached on auto tariffs"

"Lutnick’s comments came after the Wall Street Journal reported earlier that President Donald Trump is set to announce a new tariff structure for cars that avoids stacking them on top of other tariffs already in place."

"Taken together, any auto tariff changes would be retroactive, allowing automakers to be refunded for prior tariffs paid that would no longer be in effect, according to the WSJ."

"However, Trump has flip-flopped on tariff policies numerous times, meaning any new changes he makes could easily be reversed or altered."

I(we) can get refunds on rescinded tariffs, too?  This is just nuts...

Sounds like more fake news to me.
"E-commerce giant Temu has implemented a new import charge, more than doubling the price of many items shipped from China in response to imposed tariffs by the U.S."

"Competitors Shein and Temu both said that they would be making adjustments starting on April 25, indicating that price changes will be an ongoing process."

"The White House took aggressive aim at Amazon, with President Donald Trump putting in a call to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos Tuesday morning, after the company considered displaying the added cost of tariffs on certain items."

"At a briefing Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the move a “hostile and political act,” adding that she had spoken about the matter with President Trump earlier."

"Other e-commerce websites, like Shein and Temu, have said they implemented changes to their pricing due to the cost of tariffs. Temu has even introduced a new import charge that is displayed at checkout."

The companies should absolutely display the tariff tax on their items...Geez!

Harris is not overqualified and competent by any reasonable measure.  At least if she is overqualified and competent, she has done her best to conceal it her entire time in Washington.  Heck, the Democrats weeded her out in 2020 before the first primary vote was cast.  I can not think of a single accomplishment that she can claim that speaks to exceptional or even average competency.  If being VP for a term and doing pretty much nothing makes one overqualified, then my classmate pence and his predecessor from Indiana Dan Quayle were both overqualified to be president.  You buying that?

The Democrats once again committed political malpractice and assured the election of Donald Trump.  Looks like they are poised to lose to Trump's successor in 2028 too.  https://www.liberalpatriot.com/p/your-2028-democratic-presidential

The Trump voters had very good reasons for voting for Trump in November.  The economy, immigration, and the fact that Harris was not overqualified and competent.   Trump's chaotic first 100 days since then changes nothing of this.
My feelings on this would be essentially the same even if Harris was, in your estimation, more competent than in your description.

An impatient electorate would have likely re-elected Trump based solely on their immediate gratification of their perceptions of the economy such as high egg prices, "inflation" etc. The other issues were secondary in the majority of the electorate. They bought the constant Trump GOP drumbeat of immediate lowering of their grocery prices.

In general, I'm in agreement with the contentions noted by James in his post.

And yes, the electorate was inpatient.  They will certainly lose patience with Trump too, if the economy continues to decline.  What chafes me is the constant drumbeat of Trump voters being too dumb to know what is good for them.  I hate the hubris of that attitude.  Especially when spouted by Oprah, Springsteen, HRC, and the like, but also here on the forum.  Far too many people who should know better spout platitudes that basically say the dumb voters broke for Trump and the intelligent voters stood with Harris.  This is self-serving and smug, and as far as I can tell serves only to reinforce certain Harris voter's cherished moral superiority.  This attitude certainly does not prep the Democrats for reemergence in 2026 or 2028.  From time to time I am sure Harris voters feel the same way about outspoken MAGA true-believers, but equivalence does not make it right.  Not by a long shot.

Also, the "Trump voters are morons" attitude, even if it were true is simply an admission the Democrats have lost the ability to connect with the majority of voters.   Demographics used to be destiny until the Democrats sold out their base.   The D's have locked up the white, well-to-do, college educated demographic and amazingly lost ground with all the rest.
My understanding is Harris would have continued with similar economic policies, overall, as with the Biden times. In other words, continuing high rates of employment, continuing return of manufacturing in key sectors and technology(i.e "chips act" , improvement of infrastructure and cooperation with the Fed.

I think a lot of the consternation about the Trump voters, i.e the immovable MAGA voter like the ones in the Trump rallies and the ones who fly the flag with Trump's face on one side of it and the American flag on the other, and/or Trump 2028 and the like is their in your face with the flag I'm a holier than thou American and you're not.
That's where the backlash is oriented to from what I've seen/read in the media.

Probably a ton of wishful thinking in my projections, but it is how I feel.

Give me Shapiro v. Haley in 2028 and I’ll be a happy guy….   Not gonna happen though.

I'd like to see either Shapiro or Whitmer run and I'd agree that either would beat Trump today although not last year i.e due to the prices of "eggs", "inflation"! The "disastrous" Biden economy, etc etc...

"This past Friday, though, the S& 500 rallied 1.5% for a ninth straight gain and pulled back to where it was on April 2."

"Of course, the index at the heart of many 401(k) accounts is still more than 7% below its all-time high set earlier this year. And stocks could easily fall again as uncertainty remains high about what Trump’s tariffs will ultimately do to the economy."

"CEOs have been either lowering or withdrawing their financial forecasts for the year given all the uncertainty around how Trump’s tariffs will end up."

"United Airlines even made the unusual move of offering two separate forecasts for the year: one if there’s a recession, and one if not."

"Trump’s off-again-on-again approach to tariffs had made this the most volatile period for the market since the onset of the pandemic. The pause is in its fourth week and the administration has yet to announce an agreement with any of U.S. trading partners. Based on his recent comments, Trump is still all-in on tariffs, so the pause could prove to be just that."

“We’ve already seen how financial markets will react if the administration moves forward with their initial tariff plan, so unless they take a different tack in July when the 90-day pause expires, we will see market action similar to the first week of April,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management."

"Larry Summers: No question Trump blinked on China tariffs"

“I think it’s very clear that it’s President Trump who blinked,” Summers told CNN’s Kasie Hunt on “The Arena.” “We had said that we were determined to impose these policies for an indefinite period.”

“China didn’t make any consequential or significant change in its policies,” he added.
