Chestnut-sided Warbler series (BIG)

Following is a series of shots of some Chestnut-sided Warblers that I shot this weekend. We were up north and had to glorious days of spring weather, and the migrants were starting to come through. I got these photos this morning, which was just beautiful. I will be posting more photos tomorrow, but this series is just neat. Taken with a Nikon D2H and 200-400mm f/4G VR lens.

American Redstart (smaller)

OK, for dialup users, here is a smaller image of a male American Redstart. He came in while I was shooting the Chestnut-sided warbler, and I fired off a bunch of frames of this guy. This was one of his better poses. Note the whiskers around his beak.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak yawn

It appeared that this guy was bored with posing, as he yawned. I like capturing images with some day-to-day action, so this one caught my eye, even though I got closer images of the Grosbeaks. There were literally a dozen or more hanging around our feeder and our neighbor's feeder up in the north woods.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird up close (big)

Sorry for the big files sad but I want to show off the remarkable sharpness and resolution of the Nikon D2H. It is remarkable. This little hummer landed about 8 feet away and presented a nice profile shot that I couldn't resist. Believe it or not, this is downsized slightly from the original resolution, and cropped for composition.

Another shot from this past weekend up north.

Grosbeak head

Here is a native resolution shot of just the head of a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak that I cropped out of a full-sized image the whole bird. He was close!

Ovenbird

This is another shot from my trip up north last weekend. The ovenbirds were everywhere, but never sat still long enough to photograph. This male found a female and lost track of me for a while, so I was able to get close enough to get a few shots. I was then able to see some pornographic bird activity, but no pictures--this is a family forum! 8O

Male Indigo Bunting

I took this photo about a week and a half ago at our lake home in northern WI. The male indigo buntings are coming to our feeder (oddly, the females do not come in), and they are very skittish. Getting a good shot was difficult; in over an hour of waiting, this is one of my closest shots, and there is still a branch in the way.

Nikon D2H, 200-400mm VR f/4G zoom lens.

First Tiger Swallowtail of the season

This was taken two weeks ago at our home in northern WI. Freshly emerged with no bird damage or general wear--yet. Not much in flower for it to feed from, except the dandelions.

Bog Rosemary

Another image from our place up north. We have 40 acres of woodland and bog. The bogs are very interesting places. This is a true northwoods bog plant, Andromeda glaucophylla, commonly known as Bog Rosemary, because of the appearance of the leaves.

Yeah, it's just a Robin, but....

This picture just amazed me at how sharp it was, right out of the camera. I was waiting for orioles to come in to the porch feeder, when this robin with a worm popped in and posed for a few shots. I applied a very slight USM in PS CS to this image, but that is it. I also posted it full size (sorry dial-up folks, this is big), as the amount of detail is pretty remarkable.

I was about 8 feet away with the Nikon D2H and 200-400mm f/4G VR zoom.
