M20 RCOS 12.5 first light

Posted By Greg Bradley

Well here is my first serious attempt using my Sbig 2000XM and RCOS 12.5 inch. It is lacking a flat field and I accidentally lost a couple of the green subs. So I'll reshoot those and get more.

M20, LHaRGB 45:45:10:2.45:10 Ha and L 1x1 binning and 15 min subs and colour 2x2 all at -20C.

Taken from my backyard observatory (pic of it a few posts earlier) in Sydney Australia on a very clear night (yeah, at last!)

Calibrated and registered and colour combined in CCDStack, final levels in Nikon Capture Editor.

RCOS 12.5 inch, AP .75 telecompressor at F6.75, Tak NJP mount, Sbig LRGB filters, Schuler 10nm Ha filter, The Sky V6.0 and Telescope Tracer (Tak planetary program).

It took as long or actually longer to process than to image!

Apart from the flat field and a bit of graininess in the green any suggestions?

Cheers,

Greg.

My first long exposure of this amazing globular cluster. It is currently near the zenith here around midnight.

Sbig 2000XM, RCOS 12.5 inch, NJP mount.

LRGB 35:10:5:10.

Processed mostly in CCDStack.

Tarantula Nebula Halpha

Posted By Greg Bradley

Here is a first light for my new rural observatory I decided to call Viewpoint Observatory.

Sbig 2000XM, NJP mount Megrez 80mm triplet.

11 x 2minutes 10nm Schuler H-alpha filter.

I have more Halpha from a 2nd night plus some colour I'll add later.
Perfect skies.

slightly OT: STL11000CM an upgrade over a 2000XM?

Posted By Greg Bradley

I'd like some opinions from experienced CCD users on whether a STL11000CM is an upgrade over a ST2000XM with a filter wheel.

I notice with some images using a filter wheel you're polar alignment has to be spot on as well as you probably need to refocus with each new filter.
Otherwise you can get rotational effects and bloating effects that reduce the sharpness and resolution of the image. As well as cause some colour artifacts.

Ideally, the images is shot with the same conditions each time. That would mean ideally all colours shot at the same time under the same conditions for that period of exposure. Things rarely duplicate accurately unless a lot fo care is taken (which is OK too but more work and less images will wind up acceptable for use but would ultimately be a higher quality).

I think this is one of the best cases for one shot colour cameras. All colours are shot under the exact same circumstances without minor changes entering in.

For example, you shoot LRG and ready for blue. Cloud comes in! OK. That session is wasted until you can shoot blue another night and spend a fair while aligning before shooting the image. You may also end up compromising on autoguider exposure length to make sure it will be bright enough when the blue filter has its turn.

Comments?

Lagoon Halpha

Posted By Greg Bradley

This is just 3 x 2 minutes of Halpha 10nm schuler filter. Sbig ST2000XM, NJP, William Optics 80mm triplet at F4.8.

Thanks to Warren Keller for his Photoshop tutorials. I paid special attention to not burning out the highlights and this preserved the core details which would normally be burnt out.
