M57 with 300mmF12.5 Mak

Finally had a reasonably clear and steady night to shoot with the 12" Mak. Here is about 4 hours of H-alpha combined with one 20 minute Luminance. All taken at F12.5 with the STL11K at 1x1 binning.

This first shot shows the entire field, which shows the large field size that one gets with this camera in spite of the long focal ratio. M57 kinda looks lost and forlorn in this shot. The image is approximately 1/5th of the original size.

12 hours of data over 3 nights, last night was the best seeing with around 1.6 arc sec FWHM.

12" Mak-Cass at F12.5, STL11k camera, Baader Ha and RGB filters, guided with 1200 mount.

Studebaker GT

Ran across this beauty in a parking lot recently. Studebaker Super Hawk GT, similar to the one my old college friend had back in '65. It was a real nice car, forerunner of the Avanti. He had the high output blown V8 which would beat Chevies and Fords at that time.

1200 mount in Antarctica

Hi all,

Just got these images today from the French research team in Antarctica. Twilight is starting down there after almost 6 months of darkness. The 1200 mount is carrying a custom SCT modified with special Invar tube assembly by Ovision with 16" Meade Optics. Temperature was -60C - brrrrr.

M13 unguided image at 3810mm FL

Shot this image of M13 with the 12" Mak-Cass last night under somewhat hazy skies. These are unguided images taken on the 3600 mount. Total LRGB times are 6.7 minutes (400 seconds) for L and for each color. Focal length is 3810mm, 0.49 arc sec per pixel, STL11K.

I was testing the tracking accuracy (unguided and no PEM) of the 3600 mount, which has a newly developed production worm gear with very low periodic error, below 2 arc seconds for a 5.7 minute worm cycle. Stars on this image measure as small as 1.67 arc sec FWHM. The gears were produced by the machining department under Robert Watters.

This is not a deep image, as most images of M13 go. It is meant to show the core at high resolution without burning it completely out. The skies were not the best - somewhat hazy and not steady. Nevertheless, the ol' Mak still brought out some good resolution.

Big One - first 6 months

Hi All,

Here are some results of the first 3600 mount installed at Dome C in Antarctica, operating at temperatures of minus 100F. With this mount we have gained great insights as to what works and what doesn't under these conditions.

This picture shows the mount with scientific instrument package attached.
