Have you checked southwest Michigan? When I lived in northern Indiana, we camped at a few places in Berrien county that were quite dark and quiet. (Have you ever seen "Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss"?) grin Or perhaps head south into Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana.

ISS observation

I observed ISS Wed night at around 10:15 or so. At least that's what I thought it was. Moving southwest to northeast. Very bright and white, did you mean mag -2? It seemed to move more slowly than some satellites I see, perhaps due to the 200+ mile high orbit.

One truth you mentioned in your post is "We were given the option to believe in what we wanted." Give this option to your daughter and the teachers and the other students.

What are YOUR November Observing targets?

In November I am particularly looking forward to seeing the two galaxies NGC 247 and 253 south of Beta Ceti in my recently acquired 8" dob. In the solar system, Uranus will be positioned well, high in the south.

Thanks for the photo, Dave. I've been watching Venus' run up towards Jupiter these past few days. Supposed to be closest tomorrow, but the weather here is deteriorating. Probably no chance to see them for a few days.

I emailed a friend in Germany to watch for the moon to occult Venus Monday evening. I hope they have clear skies over there. He will let me know.

Warning on getting parts for a used Orion Telescop

What kind of business is this anyway? In most industries, the original equipment manufacturer (they even have an abbreviation: O.E.M.) makes additional profit selling spare parts for the assembled products they make. They don't care where you bought the product from. Secondary businesses often spring up that make a living selling spare parts.

I realize selling a single rubber foot is not going to make anyone a living, but selling a bunch of little parts will. An O.E.M. has to sell (or even give away!) the little pieces as well as have a supply of the costlier, more profitable ones. If they don't, it is bad management, their reputation suffers, and sales of the original assembled product goes away. This is obvious and simply how customers will act.

Great catches!

I think I caught the E star last evening, too. (at 160x with averted imagination!). No, I'm pretty sure it was there. The full moon light was brutal. I was using an 8" Newt.

Plymouth Harbor

Thanks for the photos. They bring back memories. I was there with the family many years ago, and Plymouth, Mass was quite exotic looking to us Midwesterners.

There was a little family-owned seafood restaurant about 6 or 8 miles south along the coast where we had our supper - outside of Plymouth itself. Nice memories.
