Trio in Leo

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Eric,
That's a wonderful shot. Colors and details in all three look great, and your background looks really good to me. That kaleidascope effect happens to me whenever I don't have perfectly flat fields in each color. I guess nothing takes the place of an even background to begin with. I know that in AA3 there Chris Icough has an artificial flat field plug-in that he's been helping me work with. Perhaps Maxim has something similar.
Great work,
Larry

My Version of the Triplet

Tyler,
Just excellent. Who cares about clipping when the result is so stunning. It's the image on the screen that matters in the end, not the shape of the histogram!

Which guider?

Posted By Larry Durst

Ron,
Welcome to the world of imaging. I might suggest not guiding at all to begin with. With my LX90 I can get up to 45 second images at f/3.3 (but with vignetting) and 30 seconds pretty consistently with a 6.3 reducer (far less vignetting) using an MX716 camera. I stack these for the final "long exposure" image. I have found that it helped my learning curve by letting me focus on image acquisition and not worry about the added hassles of guiding. One step at a time. With your LX200, you should do even better than with an LX90. Pretty much all the Messiers and thousands of NGC objects will easily be within your reach without having to go into multiple minute exposures. The only downside is the number of images you'll wind up working with--and you do want lots of time on all but the brightest DSO's, easily an hour or more. Sometimes much more! But there's lots of software that make even hundreds of images easy to align and combine.
Anyway, keep asking questions and go out and have fun!

That's a very dramatic image, Jose. Certainly justifies your title!

Jose,
Great images. I've never tried dark nebulae before, but you've really inspired me to add some to my list. Thanks for the inspiration,
Larry

Best Small Quality Refractor for CCD Astrophotogra

Posted By Larry Durst

Keith,
After a couple of weeks I'm very happy with my William Optics Zenithstar66 SD, $400. They have other models in 66mm and 80mm within your price range. Very light and wonderful mechanics. You can see my first two images in the CCD Deep Space forum (one LRGB, one Ha, but I think I need to realign the RGB a bit. The color you see I think is more poor processing than bad CA. And the stars on the Rosette image look quite good to me across the field.) I opted for William Optics based on price, reputation for build quality and the images of others I was able to see online.
Hope this helps more than confuses,
Larry

Vince,
It's Sunday afternoon and I've got too much work to do at the computer, sneaking in a few peeks at my favorite asto sites, when I come upon your incredible travelog. What a wonderful and welcome diversion you've provided! Your journey certainly took you closer to the stars than I've ever been. I can't wait for the rest.
Thank you very much for sharing your trek,
Larry
