BTW, I wanted to ask:

I know that the typical grit is made out of silicon carbide. What would happen if I tried using silicon based sand or calcium carbonate sand? Would it grind?

grinding a mirror // my first attempt

Been doing a lot of grinding on my 12.5" blank. Pretty slow going. I've logged about 10 hours of grinding.

The sagitta is down somewhere between 1.5mm and 2mm.

The curve is 0.5 mm deep at 4" out from the center of the blank on all sides. Nice and smooth so far.

I am running out of #80 grit though and so this will delay things.

I checked the link. Indeed, it does appear to be big.

Did anybody see it coming? I mean, was this a known comet smashing into Jupiter or did it just pop out of nowhere?

Nothing less than amazing to me that you can get this kind of detail with a 8" mirror on a dobsonian.
