Ultimate Mars scope on order

Posted By Paul Maxson

Bob,

I just saw the optics at the Royce website. Are they building the whole scope for you or are you having it built elsewhere? This really does sound like a killer scope assuming the Cass optics match the Royce reputation for Newtonian mirrors.

I'll be replacing my 25-year old 10" classical cassegrain this summer with a Royce planet killer 16" f18 class. cass. Conical mirror, totally open design, aluminum square-tube lower truss and carbon fiber upper truss. This will be one rock solid OTA. I'll keep you posted on installation and first light.

Saturn from Utah

Posted By Paul Maxson

Tyler,

Very nice image!! I see your good seeing in the jetstream and am glad you got to take advantage of it. We had a bit of that here in Az and I have gotten some nice images of Saturn with the Atik and C925. Gave me hope for that scope afterall. grin I need to clean them up a bit and hope to post them tomorrow.

Here is another f/40 attempt at Saturn, using the Celestron Ultima 2000 (8") SCT and Toucam Pro 840. Seeing was maybe 6-7/10 and transparency was good. We had a split jetstream that gave Utah a break from the normal terrible seeing.
Cheers,
Tyler

Jupiter - LRGB w/4" apo

Posted By Paul Maxson

John,

That looks excellent eso\pecially based on the seeing and size of the scope. Sounds like Images Plus is a good program to look at. I'd love to put together a basic step by step process for the various things we are doing with images. I think RGB is going to get huge soon and a good basic primer would be valuable.

Jupiter this morning

Posted By Paul Maxson

Jim,

Is it true that the worst night of imaging is better than the best night's sleep? Maybe that saying had something to do with fishing...HMM. Nice image of Jupiter considering. We are predicted to get clear skies for a few days, maybe later this week I'll climb out of my warm bed and try Jupiter. grin

Saturn 05 March 2005 - HELP with moon ID?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Jeff,

Got your email and will respond tonight when I get home. The "satelite" you captured looks more like a dust spot or a dead pixel on the camera. The only satelite shadow we can see from earth is Titan and that is extremely rare.

Clear skies!

Hello,

I am still very new to imaging, but starting to get a handle on it.
Anyway, I took some images of Saturn over the weekend. I was doing some basic processing and almost cloned out "that nasty spot" until I realized that it was MOVING in successive frames. I checked SkyView Cafe to see what moons were where and none were crossing the planet. So, either SVC is off or it is more likely a shadow of a moon . . the question is, which moon? All help is appreciated! My guess is either Enceladus or Dione.

Thanks!

9P/Temple1 meets NGC 5162

Posted By Paul Maxson

Dennis,

That's cool!! I'd send that one to Spaceweather. He loves that sort of image.

Comet 9P/Temple1 passed within about 13 arc minutes of spiral galaxy NGC 5162 on March 6th. Paparazzi that I am, I couldn’t pass up the photo op. Image and supporting data at

Comet and galaxy were both about magnitude 12.5, making for a nice match.

Thank you for visiting my site.

Clear skies,

Did you have a DREAM telescope as a kid?

Posted By Paul Maxson

My dream scope growing up was the Cave 18" F/6 newtonian. I loved getting the Cave catalogues and drooling over that scope! Of course I was only 15-16 years old at that time, so the several thousands to buy it were not going to happen in those days.

Today my dream scope is the Mewlon 400 (**sigh**).

I was wondering if anyone else had done this. Seen ads for cooool telescopes at an impressionable age, and spent time dreaming "boy if I had that..." without any hope of ever assembling enough money to do so?

As a 12-year-old I remember dreaming of a big orange Celestron C-14, but at $5,280 it wasn't gonna happen.

A few years later in high school I read an article in Astronomy where somebody optimized a 6" f/8 newt for planetary viewing and that became a model for my next 'dream scope', a 10" f/8 newt that I finally built 15-20 years later.

I never did get a C-14. But I have been working on a 16" cassegrain (anybody know where I can get a can of 'Celestron Orange' paint? grin )

C'mon, what were your 'dream scopes' and did you ever realize them?
