Bush 41 - one of the greatest Presidents in our lifetime

I'm not sure why Richard won't admit to voting for Perot.  Perot was very popular with the right-populist wing of the GOP and as Richard himself mentioned, the right wing of the GOP (which obviously includes Richard) was pretty darned upset about the breached "no-new-taxes" pledge.  I'm not sure if the "RINO" moniker had been invented by 1992, but Richard surely would have loathed Bush 41 as a RINO.

Without Cory Gardner, the Kavanaugh and maybe even Gorsuch confirmation votes could have been quite different.  I assume that you are going to oppose Gardner in the primary, not in the general, if he wins.  It would be pretty amazing to hear that you voted for a D in the general.  Gardner holds the most significant R office left in all of Colorado, so I think it is short-sighted for you to be gunning for him!

OK, I'll take your word for it.  But why?  Bush was a globalist and a moderate.  By today's standards he would be at least as moderate as many RINOs you loathe(d) - John McCain for example.  Bush didn't keep his tax pledge.  You must have been a really squishy conservative back in the day!

That isn't what I think of those like yourself. I simply find you to be angry, pissed off, and ready to take your marbles home and not play any longer since you lost the election.

I do find it petulant and childish, and unbecoming of an adult, but worse for you, since you seem to feign religious beliefs and principles which you don't seem to be following in the least these days.

Does every one of your days start with the realization that "OH MY GOD, HE'S STILL PRESIDENT"??... and then the day gets worse and worse for you? LOL!

Richard:

Does anything about Trump's demeanor, attitude, public statements, Twitter feed etc. bother you at all?

Sometimes he reigns in his excessive rhetoric, and I am so relieved.  Much of the time though, as a man, a husband, an American, and a Republican, I find Trump's behavior extremely disturbing.   FWIW I would vote for him again, over HRC.  Nonetheless, I think that Trump is an embarrassment to the nation.  I would love to have the opportunity to vote against him.  So, I agree with the points that Russ and Patrick have tried to make.  At some level, I suspect that you agree with them too.

These types of discussions are stupid IMO.

Technically, you are correct, the only Constitutionally mandated "qualifications" are age and citizenship.  Of course, when I say Trump was unqualified to be president, or, I presume, when most anyone else says DJT was not qualified to be president, it is because he had no political or public service experience.

Of course, his general lack of qualification for the job got him elected.   Just enough voters were itching for a populist outsider who could kick those snobby inside-the-beltway SOBs in the groin.  This is what the people wanted and this is exactly what we got.  I can really sympathize too.  You try to live a decent life and then next thing you know insider snobs and criminals are labeling you an irredeemable deplorable, who is ex post facto a racist too.  It is enough to make even the most even-keeled middle-american want to lash out at the bastards in the government and the press.

Abe was plenty qualified by any definition.  We was a self-trained lawyer, a brilliant orator, profound thinker and he had 30 years of public service in Illinois and Washington:

Your wishful thinking doesn't list a crime.

Give me the statute and the crime involved.

I submit you can't because there isn't one that exists.
Hi Richard:  The longer the investigation drags out, and given the nature of the prosecutions so far,  I think that you are likely to be right.  In other words I don't guess that Mueller will deliver proof of any high crime or misdemeanor against DJT.  Still, we have to wait and see don't we?  No one outside of Mueller's team knows what they have, or don't have on the president.  We'll all find out eventually.

Did you notice that Russ agreed with you that minor campaign finance violations are not going to be enough to go after the president?

Hi James:

I doubt it.  The normal ebb and flow of politics will cause a D to win the white house in two or four years, but I don't think that Trump's behavior will lead to an abnormally long D run in national politics.  Even if Trump is impeached and convicted.  Jimmy Carter was only a one term guy, because the economy is what matters.

Side note - Our outgoing governor, John Hickenlooper told CNN that he has, as of this morning, 64% "decided" to run for president  in 2020.  Have you guys heard of Hickenlooper?  Seems like he would be a huge long shot to me.

We now know several Russian officials reached out to a half-dozen Republicans very close to Trump and his campaign, including his eldest son, his closest adviser, his lawyer and his campaign manager. We now know they took the meetings, often enthusiastically, during and after the campaign.

We now know Russia offered in those chats campaign assistance — “synergy,” they called it. We now know no one around Trump alerted the FBI of this effort to subvert our elections.

We now know that 12 Russian intelligence officers were indicted for hacking the DNC and systematically releasing material for the purpose of hurting the Clinton campaign via WikiLeaks.

We know that Trump associates Roger Stone and Jerome Corsi attempted — successfully, in some instances — to get in touch with WikiLeaks and that they are under investigation for whether they had advance knowledge about the email dumps.

We now know Donald Trump Jr. and others took a meeting with Russians promising dirt on Hillary Clinton. We now know Don Jr., when approached with the promise of dirt, wrote: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

We now know Trump was negotiating a Trump property in Moscow during the presidential campaign — and hid this from the public and lied about it. We now know Mueller believes, based on his court filing, the “Moscow Project was a lucrative business opportunity that sought, and likely required, the assistance of the Russian government.”

We now know every arm of the U.S. intelligence community concluded Russia sought to systematically influence the election outcome. We now know this was an unanimous conclusion, save one dissent: Trump.

We now know Trump officials continued talking with the Russians during the post-election transition. We now know Jared Kushner and Jeff Sessions failed to initially disclose any contacts with Russians on their government forms.

We now know Jared Kushner suggested a secret backchannel with the Russians, which had it happened, would have been free of U.S. eavesdropping.

We now know Trump soured on FBI director James Comey, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and White House counsel Don McGahn in part over their handling of the probe.

We now know Paul Manafort, who ran the Trump campaign in the summer of 2016, lied about his Russia contacts, was indicted and is going to jail.

We now know Flynn lied about his Russian contacts, was fired and pleaded guilty, after agreeing to become a key witness in the investigation.

We now know Cohen lied about his Russian contacts, was indicted and then flipped to become a key witness against Trump.
My take?  I have no idea. I guess I doubt that Mueller has the goods on Trump.  But who knows - we'll have to see how it plays out.  I will say that I find Comey's behavior disturbing.  There is a whole lot he doesn't remember, for a guy who remembers Trump's tan lines and hand size... in a pulpy self-aggrandizing book entitled A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership for goodness sake!

By the way, Mollie Hemingway has published a  rebuttal of the  Axios article in The Federalist.  Do you reckon that she read Richard's post from yesterday and "borrowed" his content?? shocked

Russ is living proof IMO that when it comes to politics, Democrats haven't much in the way of substantive thinking.  They seem to all operate on emotion and hysterics, which Russ has been engaged in for over 2 years now.

This is simply not true.  Russ has some highly substantive thoughts and articulates them pretty well.  So do you; from time to time.  Although we could work on bringing conciseness to your writing!  In my opinion, no rational person could side with one side in this morass all the time, on every issue.

Anyway, when I read the Axios piece, or things like it, I think, "hmm - those are some good points."  Then I read something like M. Hemingway's rebuttal, and I think, "hmm - those are some good points."  This causes me to conclude that we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

I doubt that DJT criminally conspired with the Russians.  On the other hand, I would not be surprised if he stumbled through some technical violations of campaign finance laws etc.  I believe that Trump people have lied under oath regarding several  matters.    In many instances, I think the lies (like some of Cohen's) were entirely unnecessary.  I continue to think HRC is as corrupt a liar as anyone, and sadly motivated by paranoia, just like Richard Nixon, who incidentally does not look so bad in the rear-view mirror.

I find the activities of the Justice Department and FBI during the election run up and immediately after extremely disturbing and I believe that crimes were committed on the inside.  Comey comes across publicly as an arrogant, smug, self-serving  ass.  What must he be like in private?  Lynch was an insider hack and fixer of the like of which Cohen could only dream of becoming. On the other hand, my contempt for Trump's public demeanor is literally boundless.  I would gladly vote for someone else (but not a criminal and not a socialist), and I wish Trump would choose not to run in 2020.  Let Pence or Haley carry on with GOP programs, without the drama (and ideally without trade wars).  fat chance.

What a mess.  We'll just have to wait and see how it all works out.  I sleep well because I believe that our government is well structured to survive even the present level of bipartisan incompetence and malfeasance.
