The Worsening Trump Economy

Posted By Rod Kaufman

BTW: In addition to the "stewardship" of our economy, the Trump folks are now in the process of ensuring the stewardship of our elections:

"Noem boasts of Trump administration ensuring ‘we have the right people voting’ ahead of midterms"

"Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem suggested Friday that her department has a broad role in election security, claiming she has the authority to identify “vulnerabilities” in the election system and implement “mitigation measures” to make sure local and state elections are “run correctly.”

“There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” Trump wrote on Truth Social."

"Critics have slammed the proposal as an attack on voting rights and warned it could disenfranchise millions of legal voters, including women whose married names do not match their passports or birth certificates."

“This is Trump’s idea of democracy: leaders get to select their voters instead of the other way around,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote on the social platform X."

Ok, how about a joke?
We all know about the Einstein visa, the one that talented foreigners use to enter the USA. Well, Melania arrived, instead, on the Epstein visa...

The Worsening Trump Economy

"The market is in the midst of a trillion-dollar tech wipeout,..."

"Meanwhile, the labor market flashed fresh signals of weakness: Weekly jobless claims rose more than expected and job openings sank to their lowest level since 2020, while a new report found that last month marked the worst January for layoff announcements since 2009."

I know, let's have more tariffs!

Hmm, SCOTUS is taking its sweet time for a Tariffs decision on what it called an "expedited hearing"...Probably too busy gutting the voting rights act.

Are you kidding?!

For starters, SCOTUS approves of partisan gerrymandering, period, even if it includes obvious examples of racial gerrymandering as in the recent Texas case which the court has said it does not approve of but allowed the gerrymandering in Texas to proceed anyway. So, when an obvious case of partisan gerrymandering occurs, as with that in California, then it goes without saying the court would approve it. No mystery there.

I'm eagerly awaiting the SCOTUS decision on tariffs, particularly the choices on it from Sammy and Clarence, and I'll have my say on whatever those partisan hacks have to say when that decision finally happens...

The bolded part is correct, only if Congress, the executive, or a State  is violating the constitution or a federal statute.  I think this is a super important point that a lot of people get wrong.

Politically motivated gerrymandering, along with a whole lot of other policies the public hates, do not violate the constitution or a federal statute. In these cases, the court should not, and usually will not interfere.

I mention this because a couple of weeks ago you used the metaphor of the court as an impartial umpire. I think that is a valid metaphor, but the court can only act when they have constitutional authority to do so, specifically, interpretation/enforcement of the constitution or interpretation/enforcement of a federal statute.

to complete the metaphor, a baseball umpire has authority to interpret and enforce the rules of the game. The baseball umpire does not have authority to change or rewrite the rules of the game. And the baseball umpire does not have authority to enact any policies outside of the rules of game, for example, they cannot set the price of tickets, decide whether or not to serve beer, or select the hotdog vendor.

not sure this is a useful post, but I was thinking about it this morning.
Unlike the actions of SCOTUS, particularly the current one, umpires don't get to upend the rules by overruling precedents. They don't get to publicly state bring me the rules of the cases they don't happen to like so they can be reheard and overturned--in other words, they don't have a Clarence Thomas who has done just that. They don't take lavish trips paid by the owners of the teams whose games they oversee. They don't allow for more players on a team whose primary residence happens to be in a state that has more people in it based upon the edicts of the team-owners who live in it...

RFK Jr. Says He ‘Used to Snort Cocaine Off of Toilet Seats’

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said during the latest episode of Theo Von’s podcast Thursday that he once snorted cocaine off of a toilet seat while talking about not fearing germs."

“I’m not scared of a germ, you know. I used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats."

"His remark on Von’s show garnered some pushback. Brad Woodhouse, the president of Protect Our Care, a health care advocacy group, gave a one-word statement about Kennedy’s comments: “Resign.”

"The same organization projected messages on the HHS building in Washington, D.C., last month, accusing Kennedy of “MAKING AMERICA SICKER AGAIN,” with another message reading “MEASLES HQ.”

"Trump Accuses Obama of Revealing Classified Information on Aliens"

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"President Trump on Thursday accused former President Obama of revealing classified information when weighing in on whether extraterrestrial life existed."

“I don’t know if they’re real or not,” Trump responded. “I can tell you he gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake. He took it out of classified information.”

“The president can declassify anything that he wants to,” Doocy responded."

“I may get him out of trouble by declassifying,” Trump said during the exchange."

"Obama later clarified the comments in a social media post on Sunday, saying he “saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us.”

“I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it’s gotten attention let me clarify. Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there,” Obama said.

SCOTUS Decides Tariffs

Well, Trump just said the justices who voted against his tariffs will still be "barely" invited to his state of the union address so your comment may be a bit premature. On the other hand, "JD" Vance just said the ruling represents "lawlessness from the court." So, you're spot-on!

"JD"s exact words:    “Today, the Supreme Court decided that Congress, despite giving the president the ability to ‘regulate imports’, didn’t actually mean it,” Vance posted on the social platform X. “This is lawlessness from the Court, plain and simple. And its only effect will be to make it harder for the president to protect American industries and supply chain resiliency.”

PS" How "JD" arrived at his butt-backwards, upside down meaning of the SCOTUS decision typifies that seen in his administration so, Brian, look for a SCOTUS detention center near you soon!...

SCOTUS Decides Tariffs

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"In the long run, the court might have saved him from himself — at least politically."

"Some Republicans are outright praising the decision, and you can bet more are happy behind the scenes."

"It was fortuitous that the Supreme Court’s decision came Friday. Just 90 minutes before it landed, the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced the gross domestic product had grown at just a 1.4% annualized rate in the fourth quarter. That made 2025 the second-worst year for GDP growth since 2016."

"Last year was also one of the weakest jobs years in decades. And there is, of course, the inflation that finally dropped a bit in January but remains stubborn."

"In other words, the stock market aside, the economy isn’t doing great."

https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/21/politics/tariffs-ruling-supreme-court-trump-gop

Trump, of course, can't help himself and immediately raised all global tariffs to 10% and then, raging further, increased it ti 15% which he can do for another 150 days after which it requires congressional reauthorization. That's going to be interesting, especially for the Republicans in congress...
