Celestron Nexstar 8 SE a good starter scope?

Given the above and a desire to stick to less than $500 for a first scope, I am hoping to find a Celestron Nexstar 8 SE used for at least close to this price (I already noticed one in the classifieds here but the user is selling locally only).

I know there are a million threads across the Internet asking "is this a good first scope for me" but I thought I would solicit any feedback for whether this is a decent choice for a ~$500 budget used with a motorized finder to use in a location with some light pollution.

Thanks for any thoughts!

An 8" SCT like that is an excellent choice for a 1st scope.....very versatile. While it doesnt do any one thing with excellence it does pretty much everything very well when combined with a focal reducer for wider field viewing as well. Buying used gets you in very reasonably as well.....

First-time auction/seller questions

Are there generally accepted pros and cons for whether to sell via auction or regular classified?

Also, regarding payment options, I see an option for "escrow" but I can't find an explanation of how that works. Does Anacortes or Astromart manage the escrow?

The Help link at the top of the page just brings me to this forum. Are there any kind of step-by-step instructions/tips for sellers to help us list our items correctly and efficiently?

I just need to finish taking pictures of the scope and included items, and I'll be ready to sell, so would appreciate any links or answers that anyone can share.

Thank you.

Welcome in out of the shadows lol.....you have indeed been lurking for a while smile

Neither Anacortes or Astromart involve themselves in transactions beyond providing a forum for posting ads and a recording of transactions in the form of feedback whether good or bad. There are escrow services out there you can setup to use to assist in insuring a trouble free transaction for both parties....I have never used one as a seller or a buyer so dont know any details on that beyond they exist. Such services do come with a fee so be sure to allow for that in your price.

As far as ad content just provide as much detail as possible regarding condition with detailed pics that confirm the description.

I personally prefer direct ads over auctions myself.....whether I am the seller or the buyer.

Thats why I mentioned WITH a focal reducer which expands the field of view......without using a focal reducer it is best suited for planetary viewing. Wide angle EP's can also help.

Seems to work as intended here......and it is specific to Astromart.

On my cell phone it was actually blocking a portion of my screen and was frustrating to see the content there.

Gone here too now but it wasnt a problem using a desktop......The only time I use a phone to surf the net is in a emergency smile

Sounds like you fell victim to unintended consequences of good intentions, which never happens of course LOL

I believe everyone would be much happier if you were sent directly to the ad you clicked on in the first place as was the case before. Please fix this........

Thanks

Works the same as it always has for me.....but I never log out either. If I click on an emailed ad it takes me straight to the ad.

I think Mel's likely correct as well about people lacking the testerone to use their own names but they're not going to have a problem if they do. I think the AM made a mistake in dropping the moderators for the forums but I'm sure there's pros and cons with that, too.

I mentioned the moderator thing 3 or 4 months ago to Herb.....and his perspective was basically if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen smile

The video says one of the two towns built an observatory......should be a simple thing for them to get a designated CSC for that location.
