Jupiter May 11, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here is an image shot of Jupiter on the evening of May 11,2004. The conditions were not good, it was windy and the image was dancing all over the monitor screen. That may be why it looks "grainy", although I post processed it the same as the other 4 images I shot last night and they aren't grainy. I think it has to do with the gain setting which was pretty high for this image versus others. It is an 820 image stack.

Wavelett/Processing exercise

Posted By Paul Maxson

I just thought I'd drop another tickler about the Processing Exercise webpage. There are over 25 submissions so far. It's not too late to submit your's if you want.

Thanks for the contributions and thanks for looking!!

Small Reflector

Posted By Paul Maxson

I'm starting to think about getting a small (4-6") Newtonian on a decent equatorial mount, specifically for solar imaging. I'm thinking something in the F/4-F/5 range. Any suggestions on something decent, with a fairly decent mount? I'm not looking expensive, but I want something that, when aligned decently, will keep the sun in the field long enough for a 40-60 second webcam image.

Even a small refractor (60-80mm) might well do the job too.

I'd LOVE a Coronado setup, but can't afford that any time soon.

Thanks!!

Venus May 14, 2004

Yep...Venus is getting closer to it's transit, and right now showing a good cresent. Shot with an Optica UV filter and converted to greyscale.

There was a nice transit of Io last night, and seeing was about as decent as I could expect from a day that almost reached 100 degrees and was cooling off fast after dark (but still not really great).

I wasn't planning to image last night because the day had been overcast and a bit breezy. However, I stepped outside at about 8pm, saw clear skies and decided to give it a try. It's certainly not my best, but I have gotten worse too.

Jupiter from last night. Seeing cooperated slightly more than
before.

Jupiter and Venus images

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here are images of Venus and Jupiter from last night. Seeing was not very good and contrast on Jupiter was sort of low, but all in all, not bad I guess.

Seeing cooperated a little better last night, also a tiny collimation tweak seemed to help too (Bob's Knobs...here I come).

I'm not sure if it is over-processed, but I used the same scheme on all the images and this one came out this way. I think this one had a brightness level in K3 at 185 while the other's were at 150.

Hybernate mode

Posted By Paul Maxson

I'm trying to understand how to use the Hybernate mode on the GPS systems. I can get the scope into hybernate, tho I'm not sure what is meant by "convenient position". I'm confused what happens (or what I need to do) after I wake up the telescope from hybernate, what I need to do to start using the goto features again. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
