NGC 896 Today and Two Years Ago

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Dennis,
That's a great exercise...and another great image. Of course, your advice and examples were so instrumental in my choosing an MX716 for my LX90 originally, if I continue to follow your lead I can see I'm in for a few new purchases!
Keep it up,
Larry Durst

Crab Nebula

Pretty amazing, Jim. I don't recall seeing so much fine detail on the filaments.

Dan,
That target sure shows great promise (Heck, I'd be happy with it as is!). That dark dust lane in particular looks real interesting. And, yes, don't you kick yourself when you realized you should have framed better and face that dilemma? The other night after spending some time on the Rosette (I'll post later) I shot M81 and M82 real quickly once they rose above my rooftop. Not the best composition, but I figure it's like an artist's study for the real painting to come. Maybe that's a method to follow! For what it's worth, that is such in interesting object you've found (and rare) I bet you'll be happy in the long run to capture it in its entirety. (I know I'm curious about the rest of it!)
Thanks for sharing,
Larry

Vince,
That image makes you want to dive right in. Great job showing the full extent yet keeping all that detail in the core. I guees you're enjoying that rig!

And yet another M42...

Jim,
That is certainly one of the better M42s I've seen this "Orion Season." From the core to the extended regions, it's all quite beautiful.

Well worth the wait, Dan. Star color is really something.

AIP4WIN opinions?

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Tim,
I too found the book indispensible, and refer to it often. However, after using the software, I must say that I use AstroArt far more often as my main processing tool for DSOs, and Registax for planets and moon and Photoshop or GIMP for curves. However, like all programs, it has some unique and very neat features--I find the histogram shaping function often very convenient. I can't speak to the astrometry, etc. functions. And I don't have the newest version.

Wonderful! I, too, like the first wide field in Ha the most. I always like that approach to such nebula. But they're all great.
