That was a worthy project, Tom. That's a beautiful object and you've presented it very well. I put it on my list of possible targets, but I think I've only had about 9 hours of good imaging weather this whole winter.

You can find help calculating your subexposures here:

If you're good with statistics, dive into Stan Moore's site.
One would think that with that much exposure time (12 hours) that you could have pulled a little more detail out of your M 51. Did you do a gradient removal?

I can't get over what a beautiful object that you've found there, Tom.
It's got just about everything: emission nebulae, reflection nebulae, strong dust lanes, and stunning gaseous shapes. This reworked image is noticeably better, too. Many thanks for pulling my coat to this object.

I'm looking forward to doing automated focusing with this setup. I've been focusing manually and I'm sure I haven't been nailing that critical focus zone. I downloaded FocusMax and I hope to get that working during my next imaging session.

Nicely done, Don. The colors look perfect. That Digital Rebel looks like a good match for the Sky 90. You have a lot of the extended nebulosity there with no noise.

Wow, Johannes, that is incredible. The full size image is just amazing. The colors are dramatic, the dynamic range is impressive, and the stars aren't blown out or oversaturated.
