Sunspot AR 652 July 27, 2004 (another one)

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here is my image of AR 652 from this morning. As we are losing it to the far side of the Sun, I noticed at Spaceweather that they say there is another large spot on the far side, maybe we will get lucky and have another large spot to image in a few days. My new Baader filter arrived in Phoenix today and I should get it tomorrow. The current filter have a few stresses in the film, hopefully the new one will eliminate that. grin

Current image shot with ED80 at 1510UT, Toucam, 610 frames processed in Registax 2.1.

AR 652 as it goes bye-bye.

Posted By Paul Maxson

This is probably the last image I can make of this group, which is great timing as I just minutes ago took delivery of my Baader filter. I guess I'll have to try it out tomorrow on the little groups visible currently.

Latest image shot with my ED80, Toucam, 60 sec exp, homemade Baader filter, #8 and NIR filters.

AR 652 one last time for real!! (and AR 654 too)

Posted By Paul Maxson

After seeing images of AR 652 taken from Europe this morning I thought I might just barely have a chance to catch AR 652 one last time from sunny Arizona. I got the ED80 out, plopped the brand spanking new Baader filter on the scope and lo and behold, there it was!! It sure makes a difference to have a top quality filter as well, I could not believe the difference between the old handmade filter I was using and the new Baader filter I got yesterday!! I was so stoked that I shot AR 654 as well. Even though seeing was average, these are the best images I have shot with the ED80 yet.

Details: ED80, 2.5x Powermate, Toucam. 60 second images processed in Registax 2.1. More details on the image. Both images converted to greyscale.

One thing I did notice is the images were both blue, even with a #8 and NIR filters on. I'll have to work on that one

Unfortunately, Spaceweather indicated that the large spot on the back of the sun is now just a bunch of small spots...rats!!

AR 654 and 655 (?) July 30, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

I noticed that Spaceweather showed a nice spot coming onto the face of the sun and I decided to give it a go. I will call it AR 655 until we hear differently. I tried my 3x Televue barlow for today's images and they didn't turn out too badly I think. Maybe the image of AR 654 is a bit over processed. I compared my old filter to the new one and the difference was astounding, the old filter showed the sun as fuzzy and blurry at best, the new filter showed the sun as crisp and sharp. Because yesterday's images turned out totally blue, I imaged totally in B/W and was happier.

Thanks!!

Sunspot groups 654 and 655 July 31, 2004

I took to following images this morning of sunspot groups 654 and 655. I
decided to experiment and shoot with my 5x Powermate, which gives the
system about F/43!! Considering everything, I think the images turned out
pretty well.

Sunspot groups 654 and 655 August 1, 2004

Seeing was not near as good today as yesterday. We had a dust storm blow through last night (as evidenced by my clogged sinuses today). I could only shoot at F/26 and get decent but not great images of the two groups on the sun.

On another note, even though I am retired now, I am going back to work part time and won't be imaging the sun at least until Thursday morning.

Sunspot group 655 August 5, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all!!

The clouds finally sort of cleared up here about 4pm local time, so I decided to give the sun a shot. The image is very average, but I can sure see that the group has gotten more complex. It is supposed to be clear tomorrow, so with luck the seeing will cooperate. Also, there is a large group on the back of the sun that is supposed to make it's appearance by Saturday or so....something to look out for!

The sun today, August 6, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all!!

About 2pm local time the clouds finally cleared off enough to get some solar images. There are two new groups emerging onto the disk, groups 656 and 657. Apparently neither is returning group 649 which is due to make it's appearance either Saturday or Sunday...be on the lookout.

Here are three images I was able to get today.

Hopefully the skies will be clear tomorrow for more imaging (after I help my sister move into her house in the morning).

Clear skies!!
