No, at least I don't think so.  I enjoy provoking him when I'm bored.

Also, I have a futile "life goal" of getting Richard to acknowledge a center-of-the-road position, just once.

It's a character defect of mine, I suppose.

In other words, I don't believe CNN has somehow misconstrued and misreported what's happened there but it seems the statician you've quoted has gone thru some numerical gymnastics to "explain" how and why he thinks what's happening in Texas and reported by CNN is all about how CNN got it wrong. Sheesh!
Hi Rod:

That article from the TX Medical Association is dated May 4.  As of May 4, I too expected more of an increase than we have seen so far.

In view of the last two week's data, I am skeptical of any current stories focusing on an alleged "spike" in Texas.

At least we aren't seeing Gov. Kemp "Human Sacrifice" stories any more.

Me too.  FWIW I am a persuadable R voter.  I literally have not made up my mind.  Klobuchar would enhance the Biden ticket in my opinion.  Abrams would not.  Warren would not.  Harris would.

All purely from my perspective as a persuadable R.

Hi Darian:

I do not recall hysteria.  I recall a large and surprising number of folks supporting social distancing and stay at home efforts.  As you know, I think that the efforts helped a lot, and are continuing to keep this pandemic manageable for the health care system.  The buy-out of toilet paper was a pain.  But I do not recall hysteria among the people.

If you are talking about hysteria on CNN or MSNBC, I ignored all of that.

So the fact is Trump took it from 2 mil plus down to still less than 100k..... Though as usual all the blame is assigned to Trump and none of the credit lol
I firmly believe that we will have between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths before this is over.  We are knocking on the 100k door right now.

Obviously, I do not know if 2M deaths  would have occurred if we had done nothing in mitigation.  I suspect not, based upon the data from the last 7 weeks.  At the time of the 2M projections, though, a lot of what we see today was unknown.  Those projections came with broad error bars that were unreported.

I firmly believe that the heath care  system would have been taxed or overwhelmed in many communities leading to many extra deaths if we had done nothing.  I thought then, and I think now, that the mitigation efforts were "worth it"  (where have I heard that before?).  Certainly in the context of the information on hand 7-8 weeks ago.

Hopefully obvious too; I am pleased that the states started reopening several weeks ago and are accelerating re-opening now.

Hi Rod:

This article confirms Sean Trende's analysis from yesterday.  The TX "spike" over the weekend was an isolated event caused by a large report from a meat packing facility.

You will recall that CNN had spun this data as proof of a second wave in Texas?

Also, good for Texas, proceeding cautiously as required on a location by location basis.

Additionally, even your hero, Trump, uses this fact to claim that only 150,000 dead by August is a great job.

"Think of the number — potentially 2.2 million people if we did nothing if we didn't do the distancing, if we didn't do all of the things that we're doing," Trump said Sunday. -- Donald J. Trump, May 29th, 2020
Hi James:

Other than the fact that May 29 hasn't occurred yet, I agree with you and Trump shocked

Hi Rod:

If I understand the article, and it is pretty darned thin, the GA and TX methodology of adding antibody and viral test results would cause a greater number of "positives" to be reported than relying on the viral positives alone, as is the status quo in most states.  So, I guess CNN is targeting these red states for overstating their infection rates?

I'm not minimizing the need for accuracy and consistency in testing, but this CNN article is literally pathetic to the extent it is presented as an indictment of GA and TX.

Between this and the recent demographics of fatalities, it seems pretty clear we need a segmented strategy that protects the most vulnerable and a test, trace and isolate program until a vaccine is available.
I agree.  The portion about protecting the most vulnerable has been a key leg of Colorado's phase II "safer at home" plan since the beginning.  I'm not saying that we invented it or that other states do not have similar plans.  I am only mentioning this because I know our plan pretty well.

Hi Rod:

I read this article and then word searched it for the word "elderly"  I can not find the "Sweden: "We failed to protect the elderly"" quote at all.  On the contrary, the article seems to be an acknowledgement that herd immunity is a long way off for Sweden and the rest of the world. too

Maybe Sweden did fail to protect the elderly, but nowhere nearly as badly as New York, Italy, or any number of jurisdictions failed to protect the elderly.  I am afraid that the extreme age correlation caught us by surprise.
