Hi all,

I finally got back helping my sister move (how can one person stuff so much stuff into a one bedroom apartment!!). Seeing was not fabulous negating the benefit of observing straight overhead. I guess we are still waiting for all the official sources to get the numbering straight. SESC calls the large group on the limb 657, Spaceweather calls it 649 and SEC calls it 656. So anyway, whatever it's called, here it (and 657 and 655) is.

Tomorrow, if all works out well, I should be able to image early enough to beat the heating affect. It is about 105 F here right now!!

More sunspots!! August 8, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

The skies were quite clear this morning, but the seeing was not very good. The temperature rose 7-8 degrees in the 1/2 hour that I made this observing run!! We got to over 110 F today with some humidity. Perfect day to stay in the house. Anyway, this is what I could manage. I finally got the numbering correct, and made the necessary corrections on the previous images. AR 656 is quite complex, which is unusual since it is previously numbered 649 and is at least 2-3 weeks old!! It bears following. AR 655 seems to be diminishing. According to Spaceweather AR652 is still active on the far side of the sun, but time will tell if we see it in 8-10 days.

Well, it's off to 3 days of work next week, so I won't image the sun again until Thursday.

My kudos to Anacortes!!

Posted By Paul Maxson

I thought I'd pass something that happened this evening. I have ordered a dew shield for my C925 from Anacortes that has been on back order for about 3 weeks. No big deal as it's summer here in Phoenix and when the temp is 110 and the humidity about 20%, dewing isn't an issue. Anyway, this evening about 5:45pm Phoenix time I get a call from them confirming my colour selection!! What a wonderful effort on their part! That sure impressed me a lot and I thank them for that effort. Thanks all you folks there at Anacortes grin grin grin

AR 656 August 12, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

I suppose it makes sense...the weather is clear (tho hot) Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday....so on my forst day off, we have clouds!! Anyway I managed to get a prime focus image of AR 656 with the ED80 before clouds rolled in. I'm hoping the sky clears off later, but it doesn't look good.

Sunspot group 656, August 12, 2004

Well, after a long and busy day I got home about 3pm and found the sun shining in fairly clear skies. It was breezy and the heating significant but I decided to try imaging the sun anyway. The results were decent for the conditions.

Sunspots on August 13, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

I made the following images of sunspots today. The first image is of AR 661 (I think that is what it is called, it is old AR 652 coming back onto the visible side of the sun.

http://glory.gc.maricopa.edu/~pmaxson/Solar/Sun0813-661-5.jpg

I was out about 8a mlocal time and the sky was clear and the solar image crisp. So, instead of imaging I went back inside and ate breakfast. Sure enough, clouds starting covering the sun. After another hour wait, the conditions cleared somewhat and I got the above and images below. Sometimes the first impression is the best one!!

Below is the massive group AR 656. The first image was shot using a Baader IRB filter with the Baader solar filter. Just for the heck of it I tried my Sirius Optics IRB filter for the second image, shot 5 minutes apart. The difference is dramatic. I want to do more tests before I draw conclusions. Also, I tried to shoot with no IRB filter and all I got was a blob for the spot group. Interesting!!

The sun today, August 15, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Well, the clouds cooperated today, but the conditions are average at best. More clouds are pouring in as we speak. Since I'm off to work until Thursday again, this will no doubt be my last image of AR 656...well, maybe not...tune in tomorrow...**grin**. AR661 is doing quite well also.
