It is amazing to me how our left leaning group pretty much believes that the US is just a bunch of bigots. Around here these days I am about as far right as exists, and I live in a fly over red state; I completely disagree with the consensus. IMO the US is ready for the right woman or minority President. I believe that Obama will be the next President. Hilary will not be the next President, not because of her gender, but rather because she is Hilary. Just as anyone can see that Kerry is a pompous jerk, Hilary rubs a lot of people wrong.
The interesting question is why does the left and center believe that the country is so bigoted? Are they projecting their views on the masses? I am sure that many will say otherwise, but if cons are open to a lib like Obama, then I think this demonstrates the fallacy of the typical stereotypes of left and right. If Obama loses the primaries it will demonstrate the bigotry of the left. The left may not be ready for a minority or woman President, even if the country is.
I more or less agree with you on this one Jim. The US electorate would be quite willing to elect the right minority or woman candidate. If Colin Powell ran, he might win, although he is tainted by Bush and Iraq.
I do think that the first black president is likely to be a conservative. My opinion is not based upon the relative number of conservative vs. liberal racists by the way. (I imagine each party has a similarly sized group of racists in their demographic voter base.) I do think though that in recent history the highest profile conservative black leaders (like Colin Powell) tend to be more centrist whereas the highest profile liberal black leaders (like Jesse Jackson) tend to be somewhat radical.
If Obama can woo the center right and center left, he will win. The battle line won't be race in my opinion.

p.s. Some on the left will always think that the only way a person can embrace a conservative position is to be stupid or bigoted. You will recall all the nasty posts to this effect in late November, 2004.
