Really far off forum topic.....

Posted By Andrew Riehl

this idea has come up before, and the portaball guys have been thinking of it for some time. the problem is there are other axes to consider in the system, aside from the two dimensional x/y coordinates.

1st timer question - eyepiece projection

Posted By Andrew Riehl

Any adition to the system, beit an eyepiece, camera adapter, different projection distances, etc. changes the focal length and thusly the f/ratio of your system. I can't give you any details personally on how to adjust the focal length calculation, but check around on the web, you should be able to find info. Try:

Fastar System on Celestrons

Posted By Andrew Riehl

I don't know. In SCT's it's more of a name game and advertising hype than anything else. Not a big meade fan personally (if you didn't notice before smile ), but I will say Meade's answer to fastar is a native f/6.3 OTA with an f/3.3 reducer yielding ~f/2 or so. common answer from meade fans is that they don't want to hang weight off the corrector lens. Fastar just makes better images (although in an 8" you're limited to just an st-237 or possibly some starlight express cameras).

Missing Atlux in the USA

Posted By Andrew Riehl

Orion was the sole vixen distributor for some time. An atlux mount is not the kind of product that fit into their market very well (along with many other great vixen products). Now that Televue is bringing in vixen stuff, all their products will be available. If memory serves me correctly, a Williams Optics GT-1 is very similar to the atlux (even uses the ss2000 controller)...one of these may be a lot easier to find on the used market than an atlux. Don't hold me to any of this though...

Autoguiding,Optical Encoders, Interface?

Posted By Andrew Riehl

I can't give you any direct details on your specific control system, but I would recomend you contact Norbert Tackman. He's the guy sbig refers you to when you have such an issue usually. Goto:

and email him, he's a wealth of knowledge on the source and is happy to help (he was for me at least).

Speaking of Mars

As am I...time flies lately; it seems like only yesterday I was psyching myself out for the last opposition. Hopefully we won't be cut short by a global martian dust storm this time...

Autoguider Guide Scope Focal Length

Posted By Andrew Riehl

a good guideline for guidescopes is to have at least half the focal length of the main scope (I would prefer a lot more than half though). Are you guiding for film or ccd? with film, I would say throw a barlow between the ranger and st-4 and you'd probably be fine. CCD is usually a lot pickier.
