Where to start?

Posted By Jim Moscheck

I've just started my first ATM project and I'm using Kreige and Berry's The Dobsonian Telescope. I assume you want to make a six inch dob. There are plans in the back of the book to build a small dob.

I'd start there. I've been reading the book for over a year before I started and it's been a great reference. When I have any questions I ask them here in this forum.
Good luck,

Telescope Sale

Hi Joe,
I was looking at the 12" at the GLSG4 and thought it was a really good deal. That was the first time I've talked to Dale in person and he seemed like a great guy to do business with.

And while I'm at it, could someone recommend a good eyepiece for DSO's that won't break the bank?

Maybe a bit more pricy but I'll chime in with the Orion/Vixen Lanthanum super wides available used here on AMart from time to time for about $150. I have the 22mm and 8mm and they work well in my f4.7 dob, 65 degree apparant FOV, sharp to the edge and a nice flat field.

These were the EPs the Orion Stratus line was cloned from. I've never used a Stratus so I can't compare them. Has anyone else done a head to head test of them?

Awesome. That's what NASA and the shuttle SHOULD be doing.

Winter viewing/How to enjoy freezing my #$%@ off.

Hi Dennis,
My garage is used for many purposes, too, except I never seem to get any cars in there. :S I keep my 10" dob in an Orion padded bag and move it into my shed when I have to use the woodshop. I use a shop vac to get most of the sawdust while cutting and make sure I clean up every night before quitting to get the rest of the dust. I have never had any problems with condensation if I heat the garage if it's very cold, but I've never been able to get it much more than 45 degrees anyways. :S If I have to bring anything into the house condensation will form, but I just leave everything open until they dry. Setting the scope out early helps and I also use a fan on the mirror.
That's my 2 cents smile ,

Nice rig you have there Floyd. 8)

Now that you're going to be spending ALL your time imaging and you need to unload any of the soon to be neglected visual accessories like an EP or two maybe I can help you out. wink

I hear those CCD cameras can get real expensive.

I'm new to astological "looking". I have an ETX 90 with 15mm(83x), 26mm(48x) and 40mm(for rifle range) Poessls. I also have a Pentax 65-A spotting scope with a Vixen 8-24 zoom.
Seeing that Vixen is having a good sale I want to buy a good eyepiece to look into space. What do you suggest I get? I wear glasses so eye relief is important. Thanks for advice.

Hi Rick,
I have a couple of the Vixen super wides, 8mm and 22mm, and really like them. 20mm eye relief and 65 degree AFOV. I use then in my 10" f4.7 dob and they are sharp to the edge. I'm tempted to pick up a couple more myself at the sale price.
