My other two builds were carbines....one a common "KISS" build - plain as can be. The other was a little fancier with an ACOG and a Aimpoint T-1 mounted with a unique LaRue mount:

These mount arrangements give you the best of two worlds......a 4x optic for distances plus a Red Dot for fast paced close in targets - with each available by simply slanting the weapon over a few degrees:

What guns are essential?

Posted By Michael Sandy

I thought the answer to the question posed by the title was easy....the one closest to you when you needed it. On the othe hand - that wasn't the point of this thread.

While I don't believe in collecting without using, if we are talking about "must own guns" (I think this topic has been covered - but maybe I'm thinking of another forum) here would be my list:

1911 in 45ACP
S&W .357 Mag wheel gun
M1 Garand in 30-06 (the gun that won WWII)
Remmington 870
Ruger 10/22
Remmington 700
Any of the AR-15 style evil weapons

That is my list - I'm sticking with it.......

My MI-250 with Imaging Rig!

Posted By Michael Sandy

Wow Floyd,

Looks like the classic evolution of an addicted imager. Starts with a modest camera and rig (the gateway drug) and continues to spiral down out of control through progressively larger and larger mounts, scopes, and cameras until you are finally running two remote observatories (one up north and one down under) and spending more on imaging than you do for your house and car together. Then you hear that since NASA is cutting back budget wise, and that the Hubble Space Telescope is going to come up on an Astromart Auction - and you start to think about another upgrade. It is a sad tale alright, but one oft told - and you are definitely heading in a bad direction my friend. If you call soon, I could schedule you for a quick intervention - it's your only hope. 8)

Ruger 10/22 vs Recurve Bow

Okay there is no reason to have to choose between an arrow and a 10/22. The fine folks at LaRue have a nice little cross over conversion for you. Check out the image.......or here is the link (ain't this a hoot?):

M-42 a new look at an old object

I think I like the first processing the best. I like the more traditional color interpretation. I think it shows more depth and detail as well.

Semi or Revolver for Concealed Carry?

Posted By Michael Sandy

Hi Lee.....I think the answer that makes the most sense is "Yes" (either of those will do nicely). I consider self defense handguns the way my wife thinks of which shoes to wear. If the threat is minimal - say I'm just going for an evening walk - the S&W Model 642 Revolver fills that bill pretty well. It is very concealable and light, and fairly easy to control even with +P ammo. The problem with it is it has only 5 shots. The next step up for me is a Glock 26, the baby Glock. 10 Rounds of 9mm, small frame, although a bit wide with its double stack mag when you carry it. In a higher risk environment (if I can't just stay home) I like a full frame Glock - and would carry either my 17 or 34, or my 35 if I wanted to carry a 40 Cal. I really like the extra capacity these pistols offer, and I'm torn between the controlability of the 9mm and the extra power of the 40 Cal. For Semi-Auto, I'm just sold on the Glock. The action is "revolver like" in action - very simple (no safety to operate), and they are just stone cold reliable.

The advice others have offerred is much more important than the hardware selection however - Get good training, and train often! Know the operations of any gun you carry inside and out, and practice, practice, practice with it often. Practice the draw, repeated fire, and reloading. You should be able to draw and fire two shots on target (inside the size of your fist) at a range of 21 feet within 2 seconds - 1.5 seconds is better (that is about the length of time that a person can close 21 feet and be on you). I have an indoor range a few miles from work and can use the LEO side of the range to practice my draw and rapid fire - at least monthly (more when time permits). When and if you ever have to pull that weapon - your life, the lives of innocent people all around you, and the life of the person that you prerceive as a threat are on the line - be proficient at what you are doing! Know your laws and obligations as a CCW holder - mistakes will kill you or send you to prison in place of the bad guy. Do you really still want to carry?

Which is best 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP?

Posted By Michael Sandy

I really think there is only one legitimate answer to this question, and that is: The one that is closest to you when it is needed.

Any handgun is best used to fight your way to your rifle or shotgun.

That being said, how about a Fitz Gun in 45 LC:
