OK, I agree with the bolded part. But I appreciate your emphasis on
IF in your
IF/NOT statement. Have you seen this video:

The gate appears to have been unlocked, and in fine shape as at least some of the "300 individuals" entered the neighborhood. I'll repeat for emphasis:
It does not appear that the gate was either locked or destroyed to gain access to private property. Hmm, does that change things? Maybe yes, maybe no.
See the screen shot below and the first 12 seconds of the video for the gate. Watch the whole thing to see Mr. McCloskey pop up with his rifle.
I have also seen pictures of the gate twisted and destroyed, see below. The McCloskey's reported to the cops that the crowd destroyed the gate on the way in. That is their side of the story. The truth of this fact might be important to their self defense argument. It might be a minor side point. Some relevant questions though:
1. When was the gate destroyed?
2. Who destroyed it?
3. What was the rest of the crowd doing when the gate was destroyed?
4. What were the McCloskey's doing when the gate was destroyed?
5. Had the gate been destroyed when the McCloskey's started their armed defense?
I am not full of shit. We agree that peaceful protesters exist. We agree that violent rioting criminals exist. I am trying to explain and demonstrate to you that we do not have sufficient facts to determine whether the actions of these "300 individuals" justified the McCloskey's response. Maybe yes, maybe no. Time will tell.

p.s. updated to include original video - has a few more seconds on the front. Also, does not have the more aggressive defense by Ms. McCloskey tacked on. Another fact question - how long between the first video of the nice young (albeit large) protester holding the unlocked door open for folks and the time someone destroyed the gate?
