To Execute or Not

Posted By Rod Kaufman

The supreme court ruled against the death penalty for child rapists:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/06/25/scotus.child.rape/index.html
At first impulse, I'd say string 'em up or castrate them or both. But my wife pointed out that a child rapist might have an additional incentive to kill their victim if they knew they would be facing the death penalty. I read later that one or more of the supreme court jurists felt the same way.
A 5 to 4 split on the court...

Breaking Supreme Court News - 2nd Amendment

Posted By Rod Kaufman

Jim,
I can see your reference to nuances in the press being justified, since the CNN link notes the "ruling could spark debate on whether right to own gun is collective or individual."
As an aside, I thought the choice of the picture of the pro-gun protester was appropriate: an obese, red-tie-collared individual carrying a sign, also in red:

White House plugs ears, sings I can't hear you la

Posted By Rod Kaufman

I hadn't heard about the incident you've described but it doesn't surprise me. The Bush administration has been opposing California's efforts to reduce emissions from day one. Bush is destined to go down in history as the disaster that he truly is. Unfortunately, he's currently getting away with it...

They're Neck and Neck

As per the latest CNN poll, Obama and McCain are in a statistical dead heat:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/01/cnn.poll.matchup/index.html
I understand Obama's patriotism has come into question and Joe Lieberman has raised the specter of a terrorism attack in the first few months on a new administration and the White House echoed his statements a few days later. With the economy in a tailspin and the country seemingly adrift, you'd think the Republicans would be hung out to dry. But I think we all know who is going to be hanging by November...

NRA Gunning for Obama

Posted By Rod Kaufman

Even though Obama supports the second amendment, it doesn't go far enough for the likes of the NRA. No sir, even common sense arguments for support for bans against concealed weapons and assault rifles have the NRA ready to shoot first and ask questions later. Not even John McCain is immune. His sin? He supports background checks on gun nuts, oops, I mean enthusiastic attendees at gun shows, so he's got to go as well.
Aim high...

Bush Veterans Cleaning McCain Campaign

Posted By Rod Kaufman

They're pulling out all the stops, just in case. The Bush cleanup crew of heavy hitters are moving in to tidy up the messy muck that the McCain camapign finds itself in these days:

Counting the Bush Lies

Posted By Rod Kaufman

Can't we just admit as a country that George W Bush lied to lead us to war in Iraq?
It seems there's always some jerk out there who tries to dispel this fact.
Why?

McCain's Idea of Diplomacy

Posted By Rod Kaufman

Kick out the Russians from G-8 meetings! Now that's communications and diplomacy, McCain style!

Looks like McCain knows as much about the art of diplomacy as he does about the economy, which, according to the horse's mouth, isn't much...

Our Mental Recession

Posted By Rod Kaufman

McCain's top adviser says the current economic condition of our country is merely "psychological" and we're all just whiners and complainers. We're not in a financial recession, we're in a mental recession:
