Orion Refractor, Astrophotography, & SuggestionsPosted By Jake Jacobson |
Hi Bruce -
One of the best deals around right now is the Konus 8" reflector. It has 8" of aperture (enough that you won't get "bored" in a few years), and comes with a heavy duty CG-5 GEM mount with dual axis drives and a corrector handpaddle for astrophotography. An 8" f/5 is ideal for prime focus photography, and it includes built-in t-threads to mount your 35mm camera. The optics are excellent on these scopes ( I have one, and it has better optics than other scopes I own costing >$2000). These can be had for under $600 from Digitec Optical (look on the Astromart homepage) as well as other sources.
This is very similar to the Orion "Skyview Pro" 8" f/5, but it includes the motor drives, 2 good eyepieces, and a big 9x50mm finder.
If you want to see what it can do, check out the Digitec website, and you can see photos taken with this telescope. Incidentally, if you are interested in photography, stay away from dobs as they do not track the sky - you need to have some type of equatorial mount. If you are only interested in visual use, a dob is the best "bang for buck" out there.

I reprocessed my original stack. Like Wes Higgins' image, my image also shows what appears to be a dust storm brewing in the northern hemisphere.

That is a very good first image, especially considering that you got it by handholding the camera with a non-tracking telescope. It looks like you have captured the solus lacus region of Mars.
If you have a way to leave the camera at a fixed distance from the eyepiece (with a device like the Orion steadypix mount or similar), you might get even better results.

I haven't tried them, but I have been using the Baader contrast booster filter, which I believe has similar properties to the Sirius Mars filter.
I already prefer the contrast booster over any of my color filters for Mars observing.

Just seeing that photo scares me! Reminds me of when I was kid in South Dakota, we used to see multiple funnels like that - they are frightening and mesmerizing at the same time.

I have both filters. The Lumicon O-III will show more detail on the Veil.
That being said, the Ultrablock will do quite well on the Veil also. It does not lag far behind, definitely not as much as the price difference would indicate.
