Series 5000 127mm(triplet) apo?

Posted By Rod Mollise

I would assume (and you know what they say about ASSume)...that this is yet another result of Meade's current financial difficulties and the changes that are taking place over there.

binoveiwer/DSLR

So here's the question. I can't afford both right now, or in the near future, so which have you found gave you the most enjoyment. I realize they are two different animals. One satisfying one's enjoyment at the eyepiece and the other a delayed, more technical pleasure. I like both ends and think I'd be happy going either way; but would like to hear some other observations/opinions.

My advice is NEITHER. Not unless you can get out in the field and try either. Both binoviewing and DSLRing are somewhat expensive activities that some folks love and that others find aggravating at best. You also don't mention "which" binoviewer. Stick with Canon and Denkmeier IMHO.

Noobie - DSLR'ing

Martin Doyle said:

Hi folks,
I have an f6 newtonian on autostar driven GP mount.
I have a SOnt A-100 and Nikon D-80 DSLR. What do I need to get started, and I guess everyone prefers using the Nikon rather than Minolta? Do you think I need 2" T-Adaptor or is 1.25 sufficient? Obviously if I have to get 2" barlow it will be $$$.
Any quick suggestions, and what do you use for image processing from DSLR? Do you take a good few shots and stack them like on webcam?

Any advice much appreciated.
Martin

Once you get a T ring for the camera and a T adapter for the scope, the next hurdle will be to check to see if the camera will reach focus--many won't with Newtonians. In that case, the mirror will have to be relocated closer to the secondary.

SCT to 2-inch barrel adapter?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Roland Roberts said:

I bought one from scopestuff (here http://www.scopestuff.com/ss_adt2.htm), but....

I want to use this on my AT66ED which is a problem. This adapter assumes you are screwing it into the back of an SCT so the butt end of the adapter hits the back of the SCT and stops. With the AT66ED, it just keeps going and there is no way to tighten the adapter. I need one with and internal stop.

Anyone know of such a beast? Yes, I know I can have one custom made....

TIA,

roland

Seems like I've run into this problem meself...and I believe I cured it with an adapter from WO.

Polar Align TITAN mount

Freddy WILLEMS said:

Just want to know how you do a precise polar alignment with the Titan.
Do you guys use a torpedo level to level the top of the mount when the weights shaft is down pointing streight down ?
I just want to have an exact polar alignment before I start getting into the PEC or so. My mount is on a portable pier and I will use it for astrophotography and want an exact aligment as possible.
Just want to know how you guys are doing this.
Is there a avi or picures aviable how to do it right ?
Freddy

If you're talking a precise polar alignment, you'll do a drift alignment. There are plenty of instructions for this procedure on the web. Here are mine (skip the first part, steps 1 - 3, which is for fork mount scopes with polar alignment finders):

DSLR Choices

Kevin Brennan said:

I have a few questions for the group on DSLRs. First, is there a way to process out amp glow from a D70 when pushing it to higher ISOs? I am sure there probably is (dark field sub?) but not sure how this is done if you have a DSLR. I am familiar with doing it in AIP for ccd fits files or with automated functions of SBIGs software, but haven't a clue for dslr JPEG images.

Second, What is the latest best choices on a budget? I would get a body only for astro use. I have a D70 that seems to work great for daylight. XTi? 40D? Is a 20Da the premier camera or one of the newer standard cams with live view?

Third and last, whats the best XT/XTi mod for astro only through a APO?

clear skies,
Kevin

If you're serious about astrophotography, think "Canon." They produce decidedly lower noise images and there is none of that "mode 3" stuff to worrry about. Might want to wait for the new 450D to come out. If nothing else, that should cause a price drop on the 400s. I've got a 400D, my first DSLR, and I'm impressed enough that I'll likely be adding a modded 40D body to the stable when I can.

My First C8 - a couple questions

Posted By Rod Mollise

Jerry Mead said:

Hi all, I recently bought a used Celestar C8. It was not abused but perhaps a bit neglected. I see some smudges etc on the front corrector. I've seen some methods for cleaning but wondering how risky it is. I don't want to make it worse. also, the focus knob seems to catch once per revolution in the same spot. Is this normal? Is it a common problem? is it something that me a novice can fix?

any help greatly appreciated. also any tips that will help me get the most out of it smile

Thanks in advance, Jerry Mead

A "smudge" can be anything from a barely detectable something to a splotch of bird poop. If it's more the former, leave it alone. If the latter, correctors can be safely cleaned. Just clean as you would a good camera lens.

As for the focuser, my adive is DO NOT go tearing into the OTA without help. Try racking the mirror to both end of focus a few times and see if that helps. If not, it might be best to "call Celestron."

So is it worthwhile?

Only you can decide that. I'll say that Doc's service has made the difference between success and failure with Meade scopes for more than one person.

SynScan/SkyScan

Anybody who knows what`s the difference between SynScan and SkyScan Sky-Watcher Go-To hand controll?

I believe "SynScan" is the more recent name of the Synta go-to system, though the company seems to use these names interchangeably.
