Sunspots August 28, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Not very exciting, but any spot is better than no spots I guess. AR 656 is still in tact on the back of the sun and due back about September 1 or so...

AR667, White light Sept 2, 2004

Here is my image of the sunspot group AR 667 (649 - 656). The seeing was not very steady as the air temperature was rising steadily.

My Posidonius...**grin**

Posted By Paul Maxson

I don't know why, but for some reason I feel like watching a certain movie Leslie Neilsen, Ernest Borgnine movie... grin

Anyway, here is an image I made of Posidonius with my now departed C8 back in November 2003... Nothing like the masterpieces already shown, but....

AR 667 Sept 3, 2004

Chris does it in H-a and I get mine in white light, here is my white light image of AR 667. I get a feeling that it is going to be an "average" sunspot this time around.

AR 667 September 4, 2004

The seeing was terrible, the wind was blowing and gusting. I shot this image from my patio which has full view of the morning sun and was sort of protected by the direct wind. I had to use a lower Focal ratio (F/18 vs F/26) to aid the seeing. Less than an hour later we had a rain shower, it's been quite a morning weatherwise!!

Solar images from September 5, 2004

Here are two images I made of our sun this morning. The seeing was considerably better today than yesterday. I tried my new solar filter on the C925, but the images were not up to par with the images from the ED80, not sure if seeing couldn't handle so much aperature or the ED80 is that much better. Anyway, here we go.

Opinions please (Apo's of course)....

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I am thinking seriously about replacing my Orion ED80 with the Orion ED100. I use this scope almost exclusively for solar imaging. I am wondering if the added 2cm of aperature would make the change worth it. I really would love a 13-15cm apo, but financially I can't swing it. Maybe a 15cm acromat would do me well? I'm not sure who makes a decent 15cm Acromat. Is a 10cm ED going to make me happier than a 15cm Acro? I'm curious what everyone thinks as this forum really does seem to tell it like it is.

Thanks again!!

The seeing held up pretty well today. Ar 669 and 670 are pretty dynamic while AR 667 has been pretty stable so far. Off to work until Friday, so these are my last images until then, weather permitting.

opinions on C925 collinination

Posted By Paul Maxson

On the morning of September 6, I took the C925 out to try imaging the moon, maybe Venus and Saturn as well. First looks at the moon showed a very soft focus. I hooked up the Toucam and the lunar landscape would not only not focus, but all the craters seemed "doubled". I decided to image Betelgeuse inside and outside of focus to see how my collimination was. I am really hoping that the seeing was that bad, but heck...last year this time I was getting good images of Mars with the C8. Anyway, I am posting the results of the inside and outside focus images for opinions. I choose Betelgeuse because it was at about the same elevation as Venus at the time.

I think the collimination looks decent, the images were shot at prime focus but more experienced eyes might see things I don't. Thanks again!!
