Observing Tent

Posted By Jim Carpenter

Tom,
A lot of guys have made inexpensive light shield panels out of PVC pipe and plastic tarps, which they set up in a square or hexagon configuration. I don't have any links at hand, but I'm sure a search of the archives here or a google search will show you some examples.

pedalboat moonrise

Posted By Jim Carpenter

Mark,

Very nice! I especially like the first, though, because of the overall composition and depth of field. The full moon, the far shoreline, the reflection of the moon in the water leading one;s eye to the boat...and especially your wife's pose, looking off to the side all invoke a very moody feeling to the shot.

raise the red lantern

Posted By Jim Carpenter

I bought a large roll of red cellophane at Michael's (a hobby/craft chain) a few years ago. A couple of layers of that around almost any light source works for me. Usually not pretty because of the odd shapes of most lantern covers, but effective. You can vary the intensity by adding more layers. Of course this is not for gas lanterns!!!

Why not a 4" travel refractor

Joe,
If you can find a Stellarvue 102EDT on the used market, it might be just what you're looking for. Not many were made so they don't show up very often. It's a F6.2 triplet -- not quite true apo performance but much better than a typical doublet achro. Tube length is 21-1/2", but the focuser (JMI DX-1 two-speed) can be removed to get the length down to about 18".

Autumn Begins in Colorado

Hi Ron,
When did you shoot that? We drove over Fremont Pass on Labor Day weekend and we were just starting to see small patches of gold here and there. Beautiful image!

A Couple of Shots From My Deck

And here's a sunset over the foothills to the west. Those are light fixtures making the specs in the midground shadows.

Beautiful shot, Mike! The reflections are awesome. Is that a crop or a panorama? If it's a panorama, it's impossible to see where it's stitched.

Wow, Greg! I have never seen so much depth in an image of M42 before. That's fantastic. It looks 3-dimensional.
