Why Should Govt Bail Out AIG?

I recall hearing some ultraconservative big wig last week complaining that the government bailout of Fannie et al was one of the biggest socialist economic moves since the commies rose to power back in the soviet times. Now the feds are bailing out AIG with 85 billion and apparently will be in the insurance/investment business with nearly an 80% equity stake in the company:

An abrupt turnaround, evidently to prevent economic calamity. Is it just coincidental that the decision happens to occur on the eve of a close presidential election?
