Looking for opinions on a possible trade.

Posted By Stu Travelbee

Joe,
Recently I was reading an Astromart ad for a TV101 when I noticed the serial number. It was the same scope I purchased back in early 2000 and was my first telescope! Many times I wish I had that scope back and was tempted to repurchase after seeing the ad. If you have one that has been good to you for 16 years keep it and know you have one of the best.

Filter advice.

Posted By Stu Travelbee

Tony,
Having read this question on numerous sites the general consensus is a UHC filter from one of the major manufacturers is a good place to start. Here is a good article to read on filters.

Ground Squirrel

Ground squirrel, chipmunk, bird seed thief, all describe these little rascals. I have two that raid my feeders constantly, but get along with all the other critters very well! BTW, great image Robert.

Green lazer pointers

Posted By Stu Travelbee

I purchased a ZBolt (Beam Of Light Technologies) as did another club member and we compared my 20mw against his 10mw and could see very little difference in beam strength. It was the first time I used my laser at a public viewing session in the year I have had it. So much easier than using a white light beam aimed skyward or just pointing. The folks at ZBolt were very nice to deal with too.

Stepper Motor Bounce revisited

Posted By Stu Travelbee

Walter,
I had high magnification vibration in the image so I lapped the worm and drive gear. The vibration is gone now. I also installed a third axis bearing and new worm bearings, but do not know how much this contributed to the image stabilizing.

Eyeglasses, Astigmatism, and EPs

Posted By Stu Travelbee

Doug,
I have been cursed with severe astigmatism to the degree that I can’t wear contacts and am forced to wear glasses for all of my viewing. I have tried not wearing my glasses at high magnifications and still get a much more resolved image when I put my glasses back on. The single most positive experience was switching from single EP viewing to a binoviewer. I know you did not want to hear that, but using both eyes, even through glasses lets me see more detail in all objects. Your ability to view without glasses at different magnifications is totally dependent on your degree of astigmatism.

Starlight instruments feather touch focusers

Posted By Stu Travelbee

Robert,
I have a Starlight on my TEC140 and on the back of the draw tube there is a clamping collet. I am not sure if an extension could be screwed to this particular focuser. I would call Werner Schmidt at Starlight (847-985-9595) for more information.
