D&G refractors

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Anybody have any experience with D&G refractors? I was thinking of getting a 6" f/12 for mainly visual use. Thanks,

Debbie

What's the point?

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

A friend of mine is putting on a star party at the Barnes and Noble right in downtown Orem, UT. This is to kickoff the release of the new Harry Potter book. The limiting magnitude there is about 3.0. If they drove a short 20 minutes they could reach about 5.5 mag skies. Now don't get me wrong, I love showing kids the heavens but to do it for commercial gain in light polluted skies it seems pointless. I don't know what he is planning on viewing with the parking lights on besides Jupiter. I need clear dark skies away from the city. What do you guys think?

140mm refractor vs 155mm refractor

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

How much of a difference would I see in a 140mm refractor vs a 155mm refractor? Would the increase in aperature in the 155mm refractor be worth the added cost?

Pollen Allergies

My allergies have been pretty bad this fall. Anybody know what to take to get some relief from allergies? I tried Claritin D but it doesn't seem to help much.

Cave Nebula

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Has anyone seen the Cave Nebula in Cepheus? I could barely see the nebulosity with my 15" Obsession with 22 Panoptic and my OIII filter. It makes me wonder if Sir Patrick Moore really viewed this elusive object. Even the Flaming Star Nebula in Auriga seemed brighter than the Cave Nebula. It seems the Cave Nebula would be a better target for CCD imagers than visual observers in my opinion. Any other thoughts about this nebula?

Clear Skies,

AP 130 f/6 waiting list

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Hi,

Would it be possible to trade places on the waiting list for an AP 130 f/6 with my place on the waiting list for a Traveler? Or do I have to put my name on the waiting list again for the AP 130 f/6? Or should I wait until I get my Traveler and see if someone wants to trade on AstroMart?

Comet Q4 NEAT

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I saw comet NEAT northwest of the M46-M47 clusters. It was big and bright through my Oberwerk 15 X 70 binoculars. It seemed to rival Hale-Bopp and had a nice tail. I haven't seen a bright comet in two years. I can't wait to try taking a piggyback photo of it. It is a great comet to view and photograph. Finally a decent comet is here.

Mount Pinos

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

My sister and her husband recently bought a house in Frazier Park, CA. When I come and visit I may want to go up to Mount Pinos to observe. What is the limiting magnitude there? What is the elevation there? Is the seeing pretty good?

Starlight Xpress CoStar Stand Alone Autoguider

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Has anybody tried the new Starlight Xpress CoStar autoguider? I'd like to use an autoguider with a DSLR camera. The CCD chip is bigger than the Celestron NextStar autoguider. Any thoughts?

Time to hunt for IC342

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I'll take the challenge. It can't be any more difficult than NGC 6118 in Serpens. I'm going down to Southern Utah next week for some clear dark skies. I'll give a report when I find it.
