Interesting interview on Belgian television

Posted By Dominique Dierick

One of the Belgian journalists in Kuwait crossed the border with a filmcrew today. They interviewed a doctor in the hospital of Umm Qsar. Being asked if the people where glad to be liberated from SH, he answered yes. Being asked what they think about the US and UK military he was less enthusiast. According to him several civilians were shot because they were suspected Iraqi soldiers in civilian cloths. Also UK and US military did nothing to help the wounded afterwards he mentioned. And this made the population quite angry on the military.

The journalist also asked him what he thought would happen when SH would be gone. The doctor answered the people would turn against the US and UK army if those stayed one minute longer than the fall of the regime...

This is the south where SH was not very popular. Spells trouble.

Alignment question

Posted By Dominique Dierick

Hi all,

I have been aligning a Celestron SC, but seem to have a problem somehow. I know how to align it, but if you look carefully to the enclosed image, you see the white spec of light in the center of the hole is not really in the center of the hole where it belongs. Still, the circles are concentric. If I put the spec of light in the center of the dark hole, the surrounding circles are NOT concentric anymore. Could this be that the secondary is not placed in the center of the corrector plate? If so, how can I check this?

Thanks.

Freedom of press?

Posted By Dominique Dierick

Just watched a broadcast on journalists not "embedded" (read: controlled) by the coalition. They drive around in cars between Iraq and Kuweit in independent cars, and often stay in the desert to sleep. They are from different countries, the US, Portugal, France, Belgium...

Several teams have been interviewed by a Belgian crew. Not only do these guys risk their lives to try to give some independent information, they get kicked out and brutalized by US marines as well.

One team was taken off all their camera gear and mobile phones with the guns pointed at them. When one journalist asked if he could phone once to the redaction to say they were ok, he got beaten to the ground by several marines.
The whole crew was taken back to Kuwait where they were kept for 48 hours. After which they were free to leave again.

The Belgian crew in the meantime has been given the order to leave Iraq too.

Surely the Pentagon doesn't like non-fitting news (the independent teams were pretty decent by the way, very well balanced, but also quite different information than what we heard out of the Pentagon official lectures the last two weeks).

Now don't reply that it is in the interest of the journalists that they are taken out of a warzone because they travel without protection smile

Aarghhh... customer service at Celestron

Posted By Dominique Dierick

Well, I tried to get an upgrade for my scratched C9.25 alu tube with one of the newer carbon-fiber tubes.

Got zero points on my scoreboard. Celestron refuses to sell the item separately because they reserve cf tubing for new telescopes only. I tried asking them for the producer so I could get one myself, reducing the cost of a custom made tube and taking the benefit of serial produced tubes, but this was refused too. The last reply was "You can try the internet for companies that may make you one, but the cost would be very high.".

No wonder why I like my AP Starfire so much. At least a company which knows what customer support is.

Grumble.

Help, OIII or LPR... need identification

Posted By Dominique Dierick

I sold an LPR and an OIII filter on astromart, they are Lumicon but unmarked on the ring. In order not to ship the wrong filter to the buyers, I'd need to identify them.
Unfortunately it is cloudy here, so I can't check.

One has a redish hue, the other a greenish. The redish one cuts off streetlights much stronger than the greenish one. In fact through the redish filter, the streetlights (Natrium) turn bloodred.

Which one would be the OIII?

Tx for the help and forgive my visual ignorance. I am a photographer smile
