TMB Achromat any good?

Posted By Kwang Lee

OK...I'm looking at the 152mm Achromat that
APM scopes is advertising. Has anyone used
a TMB achromat? Is it significantly better
than a Synta/Celestron 6" refractor? Or for
that matter, could it be better than a
a Meade AR6 ???

Appreciate any experiences or leads...

Inexpensive Case for C11?

Posted By Kwang Lee

Hi

Does anyone know where I can purchase a treasure chest type
of case/enclosure for a C11 OTA? I'm looking for something
inexpensive.

I visited Target and Kmart, and their storage chests
were not "deep" enough.

Thanks for any leads.

I'm considering a 5" refractor:

Looking at a 5" D&G F/12 vs. 5" Meade ED APO

Does anyone have experience with both of these
scopes?

Thanks

Homemade CCD filter wheel ??

Posted By Kwang Lee

Has anyone made their own CCD filter wheel?

Or know of any websites that describe such a project?

I know I can purchase a relatively inexpensive wheel from
Miown, but I was thinking about making one from scratch.

Thanks in advance.

Tube Material Question

Posted By Kwang Lee

Anyone use tubes from Destiny?

They have tubes made of "thermoplastic resin"
and I was wondering how this material compares with
aluminum?

8" F/5 question...

Posted By Kwang Lee

Hi,

I'm planning to build a 8" F/5 Newt,
and wanted to get feedback from any
experienced Newt builders.

I've been crunching numbers trying to
go for the smallest reasonably-sized
diagonal. And I'm coming up with 1.52".

Tube Diameter is approx. 10 in.
Planned Focuser is JMI NGC-DX3.

My usage will be about 75% ccd
imaging, 25% visual use.

Using the program, Newt, everyting seems
fine.

But I'm worried about illumination drop off.
Should I worry about this? (CCD chip is
about 7 mm wide)

Or should I just jump up to a 1.83" diagonal?

Appreciate your insights/feedback.

Gary Wolanski - still in business?

Has anyone bought anything from Gary Wolanski
recently? I'm having a hard time getting
any response about his helical focusers...

120 degree brackets?

Posted By Kwang Lee

Does anyone know of any online vendors who
might carry 120 deg metal brackets? I'm thinking
of building a hexagonal tube for an 8" mirror,
and I'd like to reinforce the joints with
some kind of bracket.

Thanks for any leads.

Folded Refractor Light Loss ???

Posted By Kwang Lee

Hi
what kind of image degradation can I expect from
a 2 mirror folded refractor design?

Assuming 1/20 wave mirrors?

I was thinking about a 6" F/15 folded refractor
project. But I'm wondering if it just wouldn't be
better to go for a 6" F/12 with a regular straight tube.

Thanks for any information/insights.
