Convert Byers 58 to GOTO?

Posted By Daniel McConaughy

Has anyone converted a Byers 58 mount to goto?
I've got one and it looks doable with the Losmandy Gemini system - the motor footprints and holes are the same for the Hurst motors and the servo motors used by Losmandy.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has converted on to goto on your success.

You can get a good C14 that shows more for that kind of money - it will be shorter and may not weigh that much more.

Radians vs. UO HDs

How do these compare? I have the HDs and love them but am considering Radians for the eye relief and compatibility with Dioptrix.

Who provides the coatings with the least scatter and best longevity and reflectivity? Can one get all three at once?

Witch Dome For My Observatory Help???

Posted By Daniel McConaughy

I have a 11.5' Sirius observatory for my C14 and it's really great. I've been more pleased with it than perhaps anything I've ever purchased.

Central obstruction size, Round II

Posted By Daniel McConaughy

Most of the best planetary pictures have been with C14s which suggests that the tradeoff between larger aperture and obstruction leans to aperture even if obstructed. When the seeing is good, the planets look great in the SCTs, and when seeing isn't so great, there are deep sky objects to observe.

Field of view for averted vision

There is a book on Observing Galaxies that has an excellent discussion regarding the eye and the telescope as well as averted vision and where on the retina you should be putting the light. It's published by Springer.

Polishing convex maksutov correctors

If you have a machine, use a subdiameter lap and offcenter it. You may get zones but you have to move some glass. As you get close, use a larger lap or adjust the stroke to be more centered. Once you get the radius where you want, then focus on smoothing it.
